coe-fac: Promotion Policies updates and next steps

The following message is shared on behalf of Dr. Lisa Mazzei, Associate Dean for Faculty Development:

Dear COE Faculty,

Thank you to the faculty who provided feedback and input on the two promotion policies drafted by the COE promotion and performance committees over the Fall quarter. Thank you for your patience as we compiled your comprehensive and thoughtful feedback and comments to bring clarity to these policies. We have attached the next iteration of these policies. In many instances we were able to make changes to the policy, but in some instances, the clarification was better suited to implementation guidance. An initial compilation of the topics that will be expanded on in implementation guidance is attached.

We share a brief summary of the major edits that were made based on your comments, below.


  1.  CTF performance and promotion policy (updated draft attached):

Respondents: 12 (excludes feedback from committee members)

Departments / units represented:  3 / 2


In addition to minor edits for clarification and sequence throughout, many comments were around:

  *   Greater clarity around the four non-instructional duties that are now named in the policy: Service; Professional Development; Scholarly Activities; and Administrative Duties.
  *   More examples within certain areas of activity such as:
     *   Scholarly activities that are distinct from the TTF expectations.
     *   Service in relationship to the inclusion of "professional development", "administrative duties", and "scholarly activity" in this policy.
  *   Clarity around the expectations for limited duration employee evaluations


  1.  TTF performance and promotion policy (updated draft attached):

Respondents: 13 (excludes feedback from committee members)

Departments represented: 3


In addition to minor edits for clarification and sequence throughout, many comments were around:

  *   Greater clarity and value statements associated with the content listed under the "Research, scholarship, creative and artistic achievement" including how the activities contribute to meeting or not meeting the standards.
  *   More criteria that include reference to Tribal Nations




  1.  CF Categories and Rank Criteria table (updated draft attached):
Minor edits included:

  *   A review of the minimum expectations for Research Assistants
  *   Clarity of transitions from one rank to the next.


  1.  For the teaching rubric (updated draft attached):

  *   No changes were made


  1.  Implementation Guidance (ROUGH draft attached):

This is a new document that was not reviewed, this includes placeholder / starter text for the guidance that will be developed.

Note: In the attached materials, edits based on faculty changes were made using track changes, and in some locations generalized comments are included to indicate the intent of the change (based on reviewer comments).

As noted, some of the clarification will be expanded on within the Implementation Guidance document (rough draft attached), which will also be submitted to the Office of the Provost with the policy.

  *   Office of the Provost sends policies to COE for dean review,
  *   Final faculty review and vote.
