coe-fac: COE Professional Responsibilities Vote Next Steps

The following message is sent on behalf of Joanna Goode, PhD, in her role as Chair of the Professional Responsibilities Policy Committee:

Dear COE Faculty,

With gratitude to you for taking the time to review, comment on, and vote on the Professional Responsibilities Policy. The Professional Responsibilities Policy has passed with a majority vote of 29 to 15.

The attached policy (and appendices) will be submitted to the Office of the Provost portal today.

Next steps: Following Office of the Provost review, this version will be recorded as the "faculty approved" version. This will be sent back to the dean for final review and adjustments. The dean will share any adjustments with faculty prior to resubmission to Office of the Provost before June 15th.

The concerns of those who voted no were related to Career Instructional Faculty expectations for scholarship, professional development, assignment of workload (in particular, teaching assignments), and accounting for nuances of clinical supervision. These concerns have been noted by the committee, and shared with the dean as they may inform additional adjustments made during dean or provost review.

Additionally, it is recommended that the COE faculty engage in future actions to continue to refine the policy and implementation guidance:

  1.  Review this policy again once the two promotions policies are developed next year.
  2.  Update the attached Implementation Guidance towards the equitable and intentional implementation of the policy for Career Instructional Faculty.
  3.  Regularly revisit the Implementation Guidance with use of this policy.
