HI students--

See also the opportunity below

The Fisher Stress Neurobiology and Prevention (SNAP) lab is looking for graduate students who are interested in supporting young children and their parents. Work in the SNAP lab focuses on the effects of early adversity on the brain, developing and testing preventative interventions to improve outcomes for families, and using this research to impact policy and practices towards high-risk children and families. You can learn more about the lab here:

http://pages.uoregon.edu/snaplab/SNAP/Welcome.html

Currently, the lab is looking for graduate students to join two project teams: FIND and KEEP. FIND stands for Filming Interaction to Nurture Development. FIND is a strength based video coaching program for parents and other caregivers of high-risk children. FIND is a 10-week targeted intervention that uses video of naturally occurring child-parent interaction to encourage developmentally supportive caregiving. Videos are analyzed and edited using a microsocial approach to highlight instances of “serve and return” interaction, positive, supportive responses to child initiated behavior. The lab is looking for students who are interested in learning to coach high-risk families and/or to analyze and edit FIND video. More about FIND here:

http://developingchild.harvard.edu/innovation-application/innovation-in-action/find/

There are also opportunities on the KEEP-P project. KEEP is a 12-week group program that draws on parenting skills developed at the Oregon Social Learning Center. Some KEEP groups also include the FIND video coaching approach.

Students will be asked to commit 8-10 hours per week to the projects. Additional hours available. Didactic training and group supervision provided. The clinical team in the SNAP lab is supportive and dedicated to serving children and families. Students will gain clinical experience while contributing to clinical intervention research.

Please feel free to contact Dr. Melanie Berry in the SNAP lab at m<mailto:MelanieB at oslc.org>elberry at uoregon.edu<mailto:elberry at uoregon.edu> to learn more or apply.

Subject: [Prevscilist] FW: Externships

This is for current PREV SCI masters’ students:

See below. In past years we have had a student or two involved in lane county health and prevention. The Externship would likely start winter term—so you would register for PREV 605: Externship for a credit or 2 credits in Winter term if you were to do this. Check out their work and if you are interested in pursuing this opportunity let me know and email the people to contact, below.

This is less likely a research externship and more program implementation based experience. There may be some program evaluation involved – it really depends on their current projects. This is a good site for any of you interested in eventually getting your Certified Prevention Specialist credential, and may be a bit less relevant to any of you pursuing further doctoral study or research positions. In any case, this has potential to be a very good experience – and based on match of your interest with any ongoing projects.

So, contact Lane County (contacts below) if interested and copy me on any emails.

Thanks and see you tomorrow in seminar!!
Benedict

Subject: Externships

Good afternoon,

Thank you for contacting me about Prevention Science externships. We usually have room for 1 or 2 interns in the department but it really depends on students and their skills matching projects that are currently going on and time that staff has to dedicate to working with an intern. The best way to set up an internship with a Prevention is to have the interested student email either myself or the program supervisor CA Baskerville at Cindy.Baskerville at co.lane.or.us<mailto:Cindy.Baskerville at co.lane.or.us> with details about their particular interests and a resume.

Thank you,
