coe-staff: The Weekly Vol. 3 #19

Dear COE faculty and staff,

Campus is buzzing with life. I've enjoyed attending faculty and staff meetings and retreats this week and am looking forward to officially welcoming our COE community back to campus tomorrow during Thursday's Dean's Welcome Lunch. I have an opportunity to speak to incoming UO students at the convocation<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/convocation-will-return-uos-week-welcome-activities> on Saturday at 10:30 am at Matthew Knight Arena (faculty, staff, students, and families are invited). Interim Vice President for Student Life, Kris Winter, asked me to speak on what faculty want new students to know. In preparation for my remarks, I invited some program directors and faculty leaders to weigh in. Thank you to the dozen or so colleagues who offered fabulous input. I won't share everything here, but I wanted to specifically call out several of you for your sage words of wisdom. Specifically, Leslie Leve wants to remind students that they belong here. Jerry Rosiek beautifully states that education is about learning how to make wonderful sustainable communities and connections. Angie Whalen remarked that classes are important, but much of student learning occurs outside the classroom. She encourages students to get involved in all that UO and the community has to offer. Julie Heffernan reminds students that if they have a bumpy experience with a professor to shake it off. Faculty are perfectly imperfect at times. Ellen McWhirter thoughtfully reminds us that many students are navigating this new landscape for the first time and that students' own cultural wealth will enrich this environment.

This is just an overview of the thoughtful coments many of you shared with me. Thank you faculty and staff for the care you extend to our students, and to each other. You help create a community that is welcoming and inclusive.

  *   Early Childhood CARES Co-Director: Please help me in welcoming Heather Brey, who will be serving as our Co-Director of EC CARES. Heather will be replacing LaWanda Potter who is retiring after many years of working for the University. Welcome Heather and a big thank you to LaWanda for your years of service supporting of our college's many missions and the students and communities we serve.

  *   Updated COE Powerpoint Template: After multiple requests, we are attaching the old PowerPoint template that includes the new COE logo.

  *   HEDCO Institute on UO COE Research Webpage: There is now a HEDCO Institute block on our COE Research menu https://education.uoregon.edu/research. Check it out and learn about the HEDCO Institute's work and the team.
