Dear Faculty and Staff,

Georgia is “on my mind” and the minds of many these days. The integration of the University of Georgia by Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Hamilton Holmes in 1961, however, may be one of the lesser known stories of Georgia history that also has relevance for today - for higher education in particular. Hunter-Gault’s<https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/09/opinion/sunday/university-of-georgia-desegregation.html?referringSource=articleShare> recounting of the evidence for the “cyclical nature of our country’s history of racism and division” serves as an important reminder for us to remain resolute in pursuit of our inclusion, equity, and diversity goals. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/09/opinion/sunday/university-of-georgia-desegregation.html?referringSource=articleShare

Turning to the routine. There are numerous updates and upcoming, and reminders this week, some with accompanying deadlines. Please give them a read.

Thanks for reading, and best wishes,

Randy

Note: Thanks to all who contributed to this issue including, Amanda Boehringer, Juls Davis, Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann, and Kristi Schneider

Updates and Upcoming:

· Dean’s Blog and Financial Update: The Communications Team has reinvigorated my blog (https://blogs.uoregon.edu/randykamphaus/). Found on my blog are past messages to the college, as well as all issues of The Weekly. Please note that the Faculty and Staff weekly messages are password protected as some of the information I share the general public is not privy to. The password is COERandyWeekly and I hope that use this repository when you need to look back, and forward. The latest entry in this section, for example, is our Fall 2020 Term College Quarterly Financial Update which provides a summary of our general fund financial status to date.

  * DEI Events and Professional Development:

     * Campus and community MLK events: Please see the attached summary of the Division of Equity and Inclusion events that were shared last week.
     * Professional Development for Equity and Inclusion: We know that many faculty and staff are continuing their own personal equity journeys based on where they are and what they need. Attached please find a summary of higher education-specific professional development events that were consolidated by a community colleague, Anselmo Villanueva, for our convenience.

Reminders:

  * Irregular Campus Visits: As a reminder, for Winter 2021, occupancy coordinators in individual departments and units will continue to work with faculty and staff to record and coordinate as necessary any regularly scheduled hours in COE facilities. Irregular visits will continue to be requested via the Irregular Schedule survey: https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0Go9Zizro3uvzlX. This survey is for any faculty or staff who may need to travel to campus for an unanticipated or off-schedule visit to the COE complex. Please complete the survey before your intended visit . This survey will continue to be used for the foreseeable future. Please bookmark this page which also contains the link to this survey: https://coedocs.uoregon.edu/display/governance/College+of+Education+Resumption+Planning+Materials.
  * NIDA Summer Research Internship Program: This program introduces undergraduate students from underrepresented populations to substance abuse research through internships with NIDA scientists at universities across the United States. The application deadline is fast approaching (February 12). The experience may include laboratory experiments, formal courses, data collection activities, data analysis, patient recruitment, patient interviews, manuscript preparation, literature reviews and library research. Internships include a paid 8-week intensive, hands-on substance abuse and addiction research experience that provides students with the opportunity to gain an understanding of the research process. Students must complete a NIDA Summer Research Internship Program online application<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/nidaextshare.nida.nih.gov/SRIP/sitepages/application.aspx__;!!C5qS4YX3!RxLDl_Aj5jC1x9Wucwy64kn3iPcy7ULkjvYx1tEA0MPM-jSjubJJhWaLSOiPabI$>. Accolades:

  * The Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect (CPAN), the Center for Equity Promotion (CEQP), and Oregon Research Schools Network (ORSN) have secured a contract with South Coast ESD to implement trauma-informed school systems. This project includes training for 50 Student Support Specialists across the district, development of a systems-level intervention across 10 rural districts, and measurement and data dissemination. This project ($210,000.00) is funded by the Oregon Department of Education and five regional foundations. PI’s and Co-PI’s include Nancy Golden, Jeff Todahl, Sol Joye and Simone Piper in partnership with SCESD’s Tenneal Wetherell and Dawn Granger. Congratulations!

  * Rhonda Nese, Assistant Professor in SPECS, was one or three panelists featured recently on KLCC NPR radio program on implicit bias. The recording can be found HERE. <https://www.klcc.org/post/city-club-eugene-implicit-bias-schools-courts-society> Nice work, Rhonda!

  * We recently discovered that Emeritus Professor Rob Horner received the 2020 Association for Positive Behavior Support (APBS) Leadership Co-Award. Rob was one of the founding board members for APBS. Congratulations, Rob! See https://www.apbs.org/about/awards.

     * $33K to create an online training course for K-8 teachers focused on incorporating culturally responsive literature into the classroom. Audrey Lucero and GE, Janette Avelar, have been working hard to get the pilot course ready for spring registration. Thank you both, and also to the Alliance for Language and Literacy faculty for helping with idea conception.
     * $180K deferred gift to create the Charlotte Sahnow Scholarship to provide scholarships to bilingual, dual language, and ESOL educators. A nod of gratitude to Julie Wren and Julie Heffernen for your assistance thinking through the logistics.
     * $375K deferred gift to the Dean’s Academic Venture Fund.

Kudos to our Development Team!

  * Our Sapsik'ʷałá Teacher Education Program celebrated 100 alumni. This article<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/sapsikwala-teacher-education-program-celebrates-100-alumni?utm_source=UOnews>, posted in Around the O gives a brief history of the program in addition to having some alumni share the impact of the program on their work, life experience, and trajectory.
