Dear Faculty and Staff,
Thank you for engaging so wholeheartedly in last Friday's new faculty and staff meeting format.
We look forward to continually refining that meeting space towards it serving as one of many mechanisms to expand our knowledge of our college's work, challenges, visions, goals, and reach, while simultaneously building a sense of community through shared discourse.
Materials from last Friday's meetings are posted here: https://coedocs.uoregon.edu/display/governance/Faculty+and+Staff+Meetings They are also attached to this email.
Additionally, if you didn't get a chance to read some of the ideas, thoughts, and suggestions that your colleagues posted in the chat after the discussion about supporting our students, they are included below. Thank you to each of you for contributing to these ideas.
We heard the following:
* Student support requires:
* A true focus on individual students and meeting them as people, not just numbers/ assignments to grade.
* Supporting students by taking the time to listen to them share their thoughts/concerns/needs. Simple but important human connections.
* Faculty and staff needs in terms of supporting students:
* Definitely a need to get support in supporting students. There is often an expectation that we know how to do research, teach, and mentor without necessarily getting training in all areas equally.
* Promising Practices already at play in the COE:
* Julie H had students come to virtual office hours in systematically small groups, purposely across the term
* Suggestions for more we can collectively and individually do:
* More physical spaces for students and faculty to intermingle naturally, and that allow for spontaneous conversations. (Acknowledging COVID is tricky!)
* Liz Budd shared a great book suggestion The Coaching Habit: Say less, ask more & change the way you lead forever, by Michael Bungay Stanier.
* Note: COE Librarian, Katherine Donaldson, has already placed an order for at the Knight library! Until that arrives you can order the book through the Summit Consortium <https://alliance-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/f/r3itvj/CP71243818530001451>
Thank you Stephanie DeAnda, Julie Alonzo, Samantha Shune, Beth Harn, and Sarah Stapleton for capturing these great points. Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have additional ideas from your discussion that you'd like to share more broadly.
Our next faculty and staff meeting is scheduled for March 11th 2022, 1:30 - 3:00 More information to follow. Please consider topics you would be willing to share if you are nominated, invited, or if you volunteer to present at an upcoming meeting.
