Subject: [Lib-community] FW: Trique Speaking Family looking for Housing/PLUS! Possible Informants for Linguistics Students

Hello all,
I am forwarding this message I received on the Linguistics list in the hope that someone may have a lead...

Hello!

1) I am helping a family to look for housing in the South Eugene area, 2 bedrooms under $900/month. They are be asylum seekers form the Trique Indigenous group in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Their current housing situation has suddenly changed and they need to move asap. It has been a challenge to find housing because of the language barrier (English- they do speak Spanish) . Also, because their I-94 paperwork is still in process, they do not have social security numbers for background checks nor rental history in the US.

The two kids are attending South and Roosevelt and it would be very disruptive for their adaptation to new school and language to move to another area of Eugene/Springfield.

If you know of anyone who has a 2 bedroom apartment or extra rooms and space in their house to could rent to this family, please contact me. For rentals, I am willing to co-sign on any rental agreements. There may be some people who would be willing to host this family as well until they can find housing.

2) The whole family speaks Trique and would be a potential good resource to any linguistics major or grad students who would like to work with a language from Mexico. Once they get settled in a little more, they might be willing to work as language informants. The father is a medical doctor, the mother has a degree in social work and both have participated in work as indigenous language advocates In Bolivia and Mexico. They would provide a unique opportunity to work with a speaker who is aware of language issues as well as more cognitively aware of language processes in general.

Thank you so much for reading and share this information to others who might be able to help out.
