Dear incoming PREV cohort,
Welcome to the UO Prevention Science program! We are looking forward to meeting you all in person next week! As a reminder, the program new student orientation is on Mon, Sept 23, 2019 from 9 - noon in HEDCO 220. All incoming students are required to attend this session.
We will begin with dept-level orientation including faculty and staff introductions (9-10), followed by staff presentation (10-10:45) on general nuts and bolts (how to register, how to get your duck ID, reserving conference rooms, transportation etc). All incoming graduate students from Prevention Science, Counseling Psychology, and Couples and Family Therapy will attend this part of the orientation together in room 220. After a 15 minute break, PREV incoming students will reconvene in room HEDCO 142 at 11 am to go over program specific information (program history, norms, handbooks, program plans, and Fall term course registration). Towards the end, you will have a few minutes to meet with your program buddy and current students in the program. The orientation will end at noon.
Please also make a note of other important orientation week details below.

Subject: UO Prevention Science Orientation Information: Please Read
June 14, 2019
Greetings! We hope you had a wonderful spring. We are looking forward to seeing you in September! Classes begin Tuesday, October 1st. This letter will update you about several activities just prior to the beginning of the term as well as other details. Please take your time reading through this letter because it contains a lot of important information. Be sure to pay close attention to those activities that are required for you to attend and other activities that are for your information only.
We are fortunate to be part of a College and University that offer so many student support services and training activities. We are glad that you are joining our program and University communities!
DEPARTMENT EVENTS
* The PREV SCI New Student Orientation is on Monday, September 23rd, from 9 am - 12 pm in HEDCO 220. The PrevSci orientation is a required event for all incoming students. We will make formal introductions and review faculty research, program culture and expectations, and finalize your course registration. If you have a Master's degree or any previous graduate coursework relevant to prevention science, please bring all syllabi from the graduate classes that you have already taken that you think may allow you to waive required classes in the PREV program. (Note: Undergraduate courses cannot be used to waive graduate courses). Also bring your UO ID, and your background check results if you have not yet sent them to prevsci at uoregon.edu<mailto:prevsci at uoregon.edu> (Danette Roberson, PREV Academic Program Coordinator).
Prior to the orientation, we ask that you look at the Prevention Science faculty webpages and their CVs to familiarize yourself with the research conducted here and to start identifying potential research collaborations. PREV PhD students should read 2-3 articles written by your advisor to become more familiar with your advisor's program of research and possibilities for working with him/her. MEd and MS students should read 1-2 articles of faculty they would like to work with. You should be able to access their articles using the PsychInfo database. PsychInfo is available for free through the Knight Library (after you register formally as a UO student). All students should also read the attached article to get a basic introduction to the field of Prevention Science, and browse the Society for Prevention Research website<http://www.preventionresearch.org/>.**
* GE (aka Graduate Employee) contracts begin on Monday, September 16th. Some of you in the PhD program may have been awarded a GE. All students who have a GE must be in Eugene and ready to begin working. Please note that GE contracts are always in effect during finals weeks and 1-2 weeks prior to fall term, and as such you are required to be available unless you have made other arrangements with your GE supervisor, advisor, and the Program Director. The PREV program may schedule mandatory trainings during the two weeks prior to fall term and during finals weeks.
* FHS GE Orientation. For those of you with an FHS Teaching or Supervision GE role, you are required to attend the FHS GE orientation on September 23rd, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm and the FHS pre-service on September 25th, 8:30 - 5:00. Locations and other details related to FHS GE training will be provided later by FHS faculty.
Please bring calendars/planners to each orientation meeting so that other meetings can be scheduled. If you are entering with a bachelor's degree, your schedule is below. If you are entering with a master's degree, your fall schedule depends in part on what kind of master's degree you have, and what courses you have taken already.
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION & UNIVERSITY EVENTS
* The International Student Orientation Week is September 19-24. International Graduate Student specific activities will take place on September 19th from 9:00 am-12:45 pm. More information about required activities for new international graduate students will be available in coming weeks on the Office of International Affairs website.
* The New Graduate Student Resource Fair & Orientation is Tuesday, September 24th, - 8:30am-12:50pm, in 156 Straub Hall. This is an optional, though very useful meeting.
* The New GE Orientation is Tuesday, September 24th, 1-5PM (location TBA). This is a very important meeting! Required if you have a GE.
* New Graduate Employee (GE) Day of Teaching Training, is Wednesday, September 25th, from 9-12 noon, and 1-5 pm. Co-sponsored with the Teaching Engagement Program (TEP). Required for students with a teaching GE, optional for others.
* Required COE Mandatory Reporting Workshop: Thursday, September 26th from 11am-12:30pm. This is a required event.
* COE welcome lunch: Thursday, September 26th starting at 12:30 pm
* The Graduate School regularly offers professional and academic development workshops. Check the grad school for the workshops offered in Fall.
* Every year the Teaching Engagement Program offers Teacher and Instruction Technology Trainings to all instructors. While trainings focus on those who are teaching for the first time, they welcome any instructor who would benefit by attending. Sessions are optional, free, and fill quickly so early sign-up is recommended. Please visit https://tep.uoregon.edu/workshops-events to see a full list and description of the trainings (this should be updated soon for 2019-20). Registration is required using MyTrack. You will need to claim your Duck ID in order to register for trainings. Contact TEP (tep at uoregon.edu<mailto:tep at uoregon.edu>) if you have any questions.
* Grad Prep Boot Camp (American English Institute): Relevant for international students. The goal of the Grad Prep Bootcamp (https://aei.uoregon.edu/programs/summer/gradprep) is to prepare newly admitted graduate students or provide current graduate students a follow up for successful study in US colleges and universities. The Bootcamp program is an intensive 3-week course of study with 4 hours of morning classroom work and afternoon seminars that include workshops, lectures, guest speakers, presentations, group projects, and field trips. The program runs August to September. Cost for the 3-week program is $3500 (no student fees or insurance).
REGISTRATION FOR CLASSES
You are not required to register for classes prior to the PREV orientation meeting on September 23th, however, you are welcome to begin this process on your own over the summer. You have priority registration for PREV and CPSY (Counseling Psychology) courses and are not competing with other university students. EDUC classes (e.g., EDUC 612) are taken by graduate students from different programs across the College of Education. Given the large enrollment, these classes often have multiple sections. Early registration for the EDUC classes might be useful if you want to register for a section of your choice. We will discuss registration at the orientation. Model program plans for the three programs are attached along with. If you are entering with a Bachelor's degree, you will take the following courses fall term.
PREV 631 Intro to Prevention Science THR 9-11:50 3 credits
CPSY 621 Lifespan Dev Psych TU 9-11:50 3 credits
PREV 633 Contemp Iss Pub Hlth W 1-3:50 3 credits
EDUC 612 Social Science Res Design M 1-3:50 3 credits
OR
EDUC 612 Social Science Res Design (WEB) TU 1-3:50 3 credits
PREV 607* Prev Sci Sem (CRN: 15210) W 10:00 -11:50 2 credits

PREV 601 Research/Reading 1-2 credits
*M.Ed and M.S. students only.
**Ph.D. students only.
You can find course schedules at http://classes.uoregon.edu/, select the term, subject, and "summary". If you are entering with a non-clinical Master's degree, depending on your graduate coursework, you might be able to take alternative classes to the Lifespan and/or Social Science Research Design classes. If you think you will be able to waive one or more fall classes, you can look at the attached sample program progression, to see fall class offerings in subsequent years of the program, and begin to consider what other requirements you might be able to fulfill fall term. The discussion about what you can waive requires that we review your syllabi from master's level coursework, so we will do that in person when you are here.
Please remember, if you have a master's degree and plan to waive any courses or transfer credits, bring all relevant syllabi to the PREV new student orientation.
BACKGROUND CHECKS
As stated in your admissions letter, the College of Education takes seriously the obligation to protect the welfare of children and communities. The College requires each student to complete criminal background checks in order to participate in any school-based activities, practicum, as well as for many of our GTF and research activities. Start the process as soon as possible, as results can take anywhere from 2-14 weeks. You may obtain a background check using any of the options available here: https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/identity-history-summary-checks.
International students will not be able to obtain a background check through an approved channeler, and should select option 1 for the quickest return of results. Domestic students can choose option 1 or option 3 from the FBI link. Both will provide fast results. Should you choose to utilize an approve channeler, Fieldprint is available in our area. Follow the instructions on their page to schedule an appointment for printing http://www.fieldprintfbi.com/. If you are using Fieldprint, best practices are to use a personal email rather than a uoregon.edu email and indicate that it is for personal use only.
Please upload proof of your clearance at https://goo.gl/DuHCcd. If you have any questions regarding the background check process, please contact prevsci at uoregon.edu<mailto:prevsci at uoregon.edu>.
UO EMAIL, ID, & CONTACT INFO
If haven't already, you can activate your UO email account by claiming your Duck ID online at http://duckid.uoregon.edu. You will need your UO ID number and your PAC (in your University letter). This will be the email used by all faculty and staff once you have registered, and it is the email address where you will receive listserve announcements for the program. If you are in the Eugene area you can also pick up your Student ID PROX (Proximity) card from the UO Card Office located on the ground floor of the Erb Memorial Union, open M-F 8AM-4:45 PM. There is no cost for your card, but you should bring a copy of your UO acceptance letter for verification. Please bring your PROX card to orientation so the Academic Program Coordinator (APC) can activate your building access.
We hope that you will have smooth transitions to Eugene! As questions arise, you can contact the program director, your advisor, your prevsci program "buddy", and the academic program coordinator (prevsci at uoregon.edu<mailto:prevsci at uoregon.edu>), or current students, depending on the nature of your question. Don't forget to update your contact information and address in the UO Duckweb system so you receive all university correspondence!
Keep in mind that faculty are not on contract in the summer, so response times for us may be slow. The academic program coordinator (prevsci at uoregon.edu<mailto:prevsci at uoregon.edu>) will be able to address questions that come up over the summer, and our current students are always happy to provide whatever information they can. Have a great summer and see you soon!
Sincerely,
