Dear IACUC Community,
In early May, Cass Moseley shared some exciting news about the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) kicking off a project to implement a new tool to support the institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) and animal research community in early 2022. A brief background summary is provided below.
The project team has been hard at work the past few months and I would like to provide an update to the community.
Project Update
The project team recently completed a four-week onboarding process with the IACUC vendor to identify system requirements and business process changes required for implementation. These changes have been discussed in great detail by the team and reviewed with our project champions, a group of IACUC community stakeholders, for input and feedback. Our goals are to develop a system that streamlines the animal protocol submission and review processes, make it easier for you to manage your research activities, and reduce administrative burden.
The final system requirements will be reviewed and approved by the Vice President for Research and Innovation based upon the recommendation of the project champions and team. After that, we will begin working with the vendor on an iterative system development and configuration process. This process will begin shortly and will take a couple months to complete.
Please visit our research website<https://research.uoregon.edu/sneak-peak-new-iacuc-tool> for a sneak peek at the look and feel of the system.
What’s Next?
Once development and configuration are complete, we will begin user testing to ensure the system functions as expected. This will be a good opportunity to play in the new system before it is live. If you would like to help with testing, please email rapinfo at uoregon.edu<mailto:rapinfo at uoregon.edu>. User testing is planned to take place this fall.
How to Stay Informed
We will keep the community informed on the progress of this project with periodic communications. If you would like to receive more frequent updates about this effort, please subscribe to the following email list: rap-iacuc-module at lists.uoregon.edu<mailto:rap-iacuc-module at lists.uoregon.edu> (to subscribe, visit https://lists.uoregon.edu/mailman/listinfo/rap-iacuc-module). Project updates are sent monthly.
Project Background
The new IACUC tool is part of the phased implementation of the Research Administration Portal (RAP)<https://research.uoregon.edu/manage/research-administration-portal>, a suite of integrated tools that will support researchers and staff as they work through compliance and administration activities. In a world where compliance is becoming increasingly complex, this system will integrate information and ease the burden on our investigators. We are confident this system will serve the community well once fully implemented.
The system will offer a single dashboard from which investigators will be able to effectively manage a range of research compliance activities including submissions that cover human subjects research (live), conflict of interest, grant submissions, effort reporting, and IACUC submissions. We look forward to offering the research community one stop shopping for many of their compliance needs. As these new tools are implemented, we will be phasing out our existing systems. By being part of this process, you are helping us transform research administration allowing you to focus more energy on your research, scholarship, and creative activities. We are excited to take these steps forward together.
If you have any questions about the new IACUC tool or this initiative, I invite you to share those by emailing rapinfo at uoregon.edu<mailto:rapinfo at uoregon.edu>.
Regards,
Jim
