Hello all,
As a reminder, the next CPHS Reading Circle will be on Monday 3/10 from 6:00-7:30pm in HEDCO 220.
I have included readings and podcast for our second reading circle centered around Palestine-Israel. I tried to keep these doable. Our first readings centered Palestinian voices and a focus on personal and systemic harms. The second reading circle will focus on navigating multiple narratives within a social justice framework.
There is a danger in listening to and holding multiple narratives while not addressing the larger systemic oppression. You will often see this referred to as the dangers of normalization, and it is a very real danger - the idea that just listening to multiple narratives is 'sufficient' means that those with power can avoid addressing the injustice while feeling good that 'they tried.' All paths forward must prioritize addressing the systemic oppression and injustice on the ground.
At the same time, 7 million Israelis and 7 million Palestinians aren't going anywhere. All need to find a way to share the land with equality, self-determination, and safety for all. The only way to do this is to hear and see each other. The only way to do this is to see each others' stories and traumas (this doesn't mean agreeing 100%- but understanding and acknowledging them as part of someone's historical narrative and identity). And, the only way to do this is to build relationships and dialogue. The groups that have had some of the most progress presenting possible solutions moving forward with this goal in mind are all groups that have done the hard work of building these relationships.
Our focus for this reading circle is to hold these multiple narratives within a social justice framework. So, with this in mind, I want to offer the following examples of doing so: One short article highlighting a history of trauma for both Jewish Israelis and Palestinians; two podcasts, both reflecting the current real, raw emotions/viewpoints of the conflict; and one interview with Palestinian and Israeli activists from Combatants for Peace.

Palestinian podcast listening to Jewish Israeli current narratives (and specially from a Ethiopian Jewish Zionist perspective, given the media often only lift up Ashkenazi narratives).

If you are open to more:
It is common for people to label as antisemitic any conversations around the harm caused by Israel, when this is not the case. It is also common for people to not see antisemitism in action.

And an article from the docuseries Couples Therapy in 2022, following a Jewish Israeli and a Palestinian discuss Palestine/Israel.
