Hello CPSY students and welcome to fall term 2022!

I am writing to you in my role as Department Head for the Counseling Psychology and Human Services department, a role which began earlier this summer. My goal as department head is to bring a leadership approach that promotes our department-wide mission of a commitment to “community-based research and scholarship focused on improving prevention and intervention practice for children, youth, adults, and families” and training “socially-aware and multiculturally competent researchers and interventionists who, in partnership with their communities, promote social justice, engage in systems change, enhance individual and family well-being through evidence-based practice, and apply behavioral science toward resolving human problems,” while also recognizing and supporting the differences, needs, and strengths of the multiple degree programs in our department (CPSY, PREV, CFT, FHS). I promise to communicate department-level information to you in a timely manner, to listen to your concerns and suggestions, and to advocate fiercely for faculty and students in the department in other settings. The best way to reach me directly is via email; leve at uoregon.edu<mailto:leve at uoregon.edu>

As we embark on fall term, I want to give a warm welcome to our incoming cohort of 8 CPSY students: Andrea, Bonnie, Daisy, Hillary, Janette, Jose, LP, and Patricia! The rest of you on this email will remember the excitement, surprises, and, some challenges, that a transition to a PhD program in Counseling Psychology can bring. I appreciate your outreach to our 1st year students which has already been evident in your support of the newest cohort to our CPSY community. Welcome, and thank you!

A few logistical announcements for this academic year –

  1. Dr. Anne Marie Mauricio has graciously agreed to serve as director of clinical training (DCT) for CPSY this year. I know that many of you have already been in touch with and working with Dr. Mauricio on internship or externship questions and requirements.

  1. CPSY 5th year graduate student Lue Williams has a GE position this academic year that includes some CPSY programmatic support. To this end, Lue will hold office hours on Friday mornings. Lue has experienced all the major CPSY program milestones (except dissertation) and has a wealth of information. If she doesn’t have the answer to your question, she can help direct you to the right person, and/or raise topics with me as department head, Dr. Mauricio as DCT, or with SALA. Lue will correspond separately on the student-only listserve with more details later this month.

  1. We do not have a named CPSY program director this year. This means that it is especially important that you are familiar with the program handbook and program plan and know who to go to for questions.
     * The current program handbook, program plan, and 6-year program progression for our 2022-23 incoming cohort have been updated and are live on the CPSY blog: https://cpsy.uoregon.edu/course-information/ . Non-first year students, please also reference these materials if you have conflicting info about program requirements (in addition to talking with your advisor). For example, the graduate school made some changes to dissertation processes that are now updated in the 2022-23 handbook (but not in other handbooks). We hope to convene a small working group to make additional handbook edits later this year.
     * When you have questions, please use these resources, in this order:

                                                               i. Check your handbook (or, the 2022-23 handbook)

ii. Ask your assigned CPSY 3rd year student mentor

iii. Email cpsy at uoregon.edu<mailto:cpsy at uoregon.edu> (CPSY Academic Program Coordinator extraordinaire, Danette Roberson)

iv. Bring questions to your friday doc sem

                                                             v. Attend the office hours of the CPSY program coordination GE (luew at uoregon.edu<mailto:luew at uoregon.edu>)

vi. Email your advisor or attend their office hours

If you still don't have the answer to your question:

vii. If related to externship, practica, or internship, contact the DCT (amariem at uoregon.edu<mailto:amariem at uoregon.edu>)

viii. If a department-wide topic, email Department Head (leve at uoregon.edu<mailto:leve at uoregon.edu> )

     * If you don’t seem to be on the CPSY email listserve, or the CPSY student listserve, please email cpsy at uoregon.edu<mailto:cpsy at uoregon.edu> to inquire, you should be on both! If you received this email you are on the CPSY email listserve.

  1. This term, we have two “combined” doctoral seminars for all CPSY students and faculty. Other Fridays, please check with your advisor for the doc sem schedule and expectations.
     * The first combined doc sem is Friday Sept 30, from 10:15 – 11:30. We have will donuts! Please bring your own beverage. This is a primarily a welcome to fall term doc sem, and all PhD students and faculty in CPSY and Prevention Science are invited. There will be a few announcements and updates at this doc sem, too.
     * The second combined doc sem is Friday Oct 14th, from 10:00 - 12:00. This is for CPSY students and faculty only. We will be discussing processes and solutions for the future that CPSY faculty and students believe would further strengthen our program. This meeting will be guided by the UO Ombuds office, and is intended to be forward-looking and solution-oriented. Summary notes from the spring term Ombuds meeting will be circulated to students in advance.

I promise that not all my emails will be this lengthy! Thank you for reading this far, and I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming week or two.

Best wishes for an exciting and productive fall term, that furthers each of our professional development and moves us forward in our individual career goals,
Leslie
