Greetings all,
Please see below the request for workshops for this spring’s Raices Unidas conference for Oregon high school students. Please consider proposing a one hour workshop. This is an awesome opportunity to engage with Latinx youth; in the past the conference has had a harder time getting proposals for workshops conducted in Spanish, so that would be a plus, but it is also fine to propose a workshop to conduct in English. The conference theme is awesome. Proposals are due Jan. 31 and conference is Feb 26th.
Best,
Ellen

I support all students regardless of immigration status or country of origin. As a member of the UO Dreamers Working Group, I support Dreamer students and promote their sense of belonging and safety as they pursue their higher education goals. For more information and resources please visit our Dreamers page (https://www.uoregon.edu/uo-dreamers) and the Immigration FAQs page (http://international.uoregon.edu/immigration_faq ). Remember, when interacting with faculty, staff, and offices around campus you are never required to reveal your status.

Dear Community,
University of Oregon Mecha, would like to announce that we will be hosting our 17th annual Raices Unidas Youth Conference (RUYC, also formerly known as Raza Unida Youth Conference) on Friday, February 26th via Accelevents. We are asking and inviting community members, alumni, university students and faculty to help us with this event by presenting a workshop during the conference.
The Movement
Mecha is a student organization that has been active at the University of Oregon Campus for over fifty years. We strive to promote awareness on issues related to the Latinx community on campus. One of our primary goals is the recruitment and retention of Oregon's Latinx students in higher education. Mecha’s intent is to ensure that Latinx cultures and philosophies are being represented at the University of Oregon and in our surrounding communities.
RUYC
One of the ways Mecha fulfills its goals is through our RUYC event. This conference is typically an all-day event where we invite Latinx high school students from all over Oregon to participate in a day filled with Keynote speakers, workshops, and relationship building. Given our current realities, we have shifted to a remote platform, Accelevents, and the conference will be held virtually with a modified schedule of 10am – 2:30pm.
In past years we have hosted just over 500 students, and the multitude of workshops available made the conference an even greater success. This year’s workshops are the backbone of our conference and will draw students to engage with us in a virtual format. We are hoping to improve the experience of the students and give them a memorable conference that will change their lives and empower them as students of color.
The theme of this year’s Raices Unidas Youth Conference is Nuestra Lucha Sigue (Our Fight Continues) in hopes of inspiring our youth to fight for change, strive for equity, and demonstrate unity amongst all Latinx communities. Given the unprecedented events of 2020, it’s time we show our students the power of their identity and the importance of resilience. We cannot remain silent and complacent in the face of injustices, not anymore.
We hope that both the students and you, the presenter, will gain a stronger sense of community knowledge and will feel invested in the students’ lives and future education.
Workshop Information
We are looking for workshops that discuss topics such as culture, indigenous roots, identity, education, gender, sexuality, immigration, Black Lives Matter movement, allyship and most importantly workshops that discuss issues affecting Latinx communities. Given the wide range of the theme, extra consideration will be given to workshops that discuss current events, such as the disproportionate effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on BIPOC communities and voter representation in the 2020 election.
UO Mecha cannot do this on our own and we need people like you to help make this event a success. If you choose to participate as a workshop presenter, please let us know as soon as possible! In order to make the necessary preparations we are asking workshop proposals to be submitted by January 31st. Multiple workshops are also welcomed and encouraged as we will have 2 sessions of workshops. The first session is from 11:00 – 11:50am and the second session is from 12:30 – 1:30pm. Presenters are invited to stay for the duration of the conference. You will find the workshop presenter application form in the link below.
