Greetings CPSY community,

I hope you are all faring as well as possible!
Below I forward a message from the National Latinx Psych Association listserv, from Dr. Melanie Domenech-Rodriguez, who provides a link to an NPR story about the terms “POC” and “BIPOC”.
It highlights the limitations and dynamics of language and labels, and the breadth of preferences, and underscores the importance of cultural humility and continuous learning.

Best,
Ellen

I support all students regardless of immigration status or country of origin. As a member of the UO Dreamers Working Group, I support Dreamer students and promote their sense of belonging and safety as they pursue their higher education goals. For more information and resources please visit our Dreamers page (https://www.uoregon.edu/uo-dreamers) and the Immigration FAQs page (http://international.uoregon.edu/immigration_faq ). Remember, when interacting with faculty, staff, and offices around campus you are never required to reveal your status.

Dear colleagues,

I hope you are well. If you watched the debate last night, I hope you are finding space to process and let your feelings be what they might be. Personally, I had a hard time getting out of bed this morning and I’m still wondering what my 9:30a “diversity” class is going to look like. This Codeswitch episode just dropped this morning, and it was the thing that got me out of bed. I thought others of you might appreciate having this on hand. Shereen Marisol Meraji and Gene Demby engage a nuanced discussion about umbrella terms, specifically BIPOC and POC.

May you be safe. May you be healthy. May you live with ease and happiness.
