Greetings CPSY community,
Attached please find a statement by the American Educational Research Association and the National Academy of Education. The statement responds to three recent efforts in the federal administration (including https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-combating-race-sex-stereotyping/ ) to ban or control how federally funded institutions and programs, including public schools, can teach and train about race, racism, and equality. A growing list of organizations has endorsed the statement.
The statement concludes:
"The evidence suggests that addressing issues of race and racism requires a level of candor not often experienced in workplaces and education settings. In the 1970s, educators stood against Holocaust deniers to ensure that students would learn the truth of Nazism and Anti-Semitism. Today, we must stand against the notion that systemic racism does not exist. Institutions examining their practices, researchers interrogating these issues, or educational programming confronting the topic should be applauded for tackling the most difficult of problems. As our research attests, all of us, regardless of what we do or what we believe, will be better for it."
Understanding these federal actions, the multitude of implications for all communities and for our research, teaching, and service efforts, is our collective responsibility. And so is countering harmful policies with evidence-based advocacy across systems of the ecology. Let's keep supporting each other as we grapple with yet another wave in the ocean that is 2020!
Ellen
