Hello,

             My name is Muzi Li (Lily), an international student from China, and I am a second year MBA student at Lundquist College of Business. I am writing to you from my role as the new treasurer for the graduate student support group – Creating Connections. The purpose of Creating Connections, which is housed in the Center on Diversity and Community, is to connect graduate students who identify with underrepresented populations across the University of Oregon to create a supportive social network. This goal is accomplished through planned social gatherings and community building activities.

            We will be holding our third annual Dinner for Diversity in January. This diversity dinner event was attended by over 140 students last year representing a 40% increase in attendance from the very first year. Over 20 departments across campus were represented at the dinner. Creating Connections is able to host this event through donations from various departments and colleges across campus. With the strong campus support, we provided a full meal and beverages to attendees and have had a very successful event. Of the 100+ attendees, 74% of them had the goal of making new friends and socializing with other students from underrepresented populations and various social and cultural backgrounds. Additionally, we received overwhelmingly positive responses from attendees, 87% of them said they would both attend future events and recommend them to friends.

            Due to the overwhelming positive responses we have received from attendees and the desire to grow Creating Connections community, we will be continuing to offer social gatherings throughout the 2019/2020 academic year. The Dinner for Diversity event on January 17th, 2020 will be the largest event of the year and we need your support! We are asking for a contribution of $250 from your department to help make this event possible. We would not be able to make the event happen and provide this important service to your students without your continued support.

Creating Connections will be inviting all of your graduate students and encouraging those who identify with an underrepresented population to participate. With your help, we can begin creating a community and making underrepresented students feel more included and welcome. I look forward to hearing from you.
