APPIC MATCH NEWS
---
We are writing to let you know that APPIC has developed a Task Force to respond to the needs to psychology graduate students and internship and postdoctoral programs that have been affected by the recent hurricanes. Here is the limited information that we currently have:
Puerto Rico: Much of the island is experiencing severe shortages of power, food and water, medical services, cell phones and other ways to communicate, internet access, and many other basic necessities. Several individuals who live on the U.S. mainland have been kind enough to help us establish limited channels of communication with a few students and faculty in the affected areas. With regard to the needs of the estimated 75 to 100 internship-seeking students who attend schools based in Puerto Rico, we understand that there is great concern about upcoming application deadlines and their ability to complete applications, obtain transcripts, etc. We have not yet heard from students who are concerned about postdoctoral applications or who are currently completing their internship or postdoctoral training.
Southeastern United States: As we all know, some areas of the mainland were hit very hard as well. We have limited information that suggests that some students in these areas also have concerns about application deadlines and interview availability.
APPIC has been in touch with APA, APAGS, and the Council of Chairs of Training Councils (CCTC), an umbrella organization that encompasses many other organizations in psychology education and training. Each of these organizations have expressed their concerns and support.
Our current focus is to continue to establish communication channels and to clearly understand what is needed. At the moment, the following concerns are becoming clearer:
1. Upcoming deadlines and the difficulties in completing and submitting applications in a timely manner (given lack of access to power, internet, faculty, individuals writing letters of reference, etc.).
2. Difficulties with travel in order to attend on-site interviews (due to airport closures, such as in Puerto Rico) as well as interviewing via Skype and related methods (due to lack of power, internet outages, cell phone and land line outages, etc.).
3. Students who currently or previously attended institutions that are located in the affected areas may be unable to obtain official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and related materials.
While no decisions have yet been made, these issues are under active discussion and we will be in contact soon with additional information and guidance for all participants.
In the meantime:
Students/Doctoral Programs in Affected Areas (internship-seeking graduate students, current interns and postdoctoral fellows, Directors of Clinical Training): Please contact us (see below) if you have specific needs or concerns that you would like us to know about.
Internship and Postdoctoral Programs in Affected Areas: Please contact us (see below) if you would like APPIC to make an announcement about the status of your program and/of your program's application process, or if you need to consult about the status of your current trainees.
All Training Directors of Internships and Postdoctoral programs: We will be in touch soon regarding our requests as to how you can be helpful to affected students.
Concerns about matters related to the impact of the hurricanes should be directed to Dr. Greg Keilin at gkeilin at mail.utexas.edu<mailto:gkeilin at mail.utexas.edu> or 512-410-0002.
Additional information and recommendations will be distributed soon.
