Dear CPSY, CFT, and SPSY students (program directors, please forward!),
This email contains important details regarding the Spanish Specialization AND a class that all others may take as an elective. Please read this email carefully.
First, CPSY 508: Topics in Latina/o Mental Health will be offered Spring of 2018. It is a requirement of the specialization and an elective for any other student. Note that this class was not offered in 2017 or 2016. It is a 3 credit class and in order to accommodate the 3 graduate programs involved it will be offered Friday afternoons from 2-4:50 pm. (I know, right?) I cannot guarantee at this time that it will be offered the following spring, so if you plan to graduate with the specialization please take the class this spring, 2018. During this winter term I will assess the need to offer this class in spring of 2019 as well as plans for courses in the 2018-2019 academic year.
Here is a draft of the course overview for CPSY 508:
This is a required course for graduate students completing the Spanish Language Psychological Services and Research Specialization and is open to graduate students outside of the specialization. The purpose of this course is to enhance understanding and knowledge of Spanish-speaking Latinas/os in the U.S. Specifically this course will focus on aspects of the social, historical, political, and cultural contexts that shape and are shaped by the experiences of Latinas/os in the United States, with particular attention to strengths, assets and resilience as well as conditions of social injustice and inequity, and how such conditions influence the health and well-being of Latina/o Spanish-speaking communities.
In the spring of 2018, this course will have a cross-disciplinary focus, drawing upon the knowledge and experience of professionals with whom mental health professionals (counseling and school psychologists and couple and family therapists) can and should collaborate in the service of Latina/o and Spanish speaking clients, students, and families.
Second, attached to this email is a set of steps for enrollment in and completion of the Spanish Specialization. Please review the website in conjunction with reading this set of steps: https://education.uoregon.edu/program/spanish-language-psychological-service-research-specialization-slpsr
If you plan to enroll in the specialization it is important to do so as early in your program as possible. This is very important in our planning process for coming terms and years.
Thank you and have a great winter break,
Ellen
