Dear COE Community,

Happy New Year and welcome to winter term! I hope you enjoyed some time away from campus over the winter break and had an opportunity to recharge in meaningful ways. If you worked, it was pretty quiet around here! Sometimes the quiet is a welcome change of pace (or perhaps it’s just me!).

I know many COE faculty were supposed to be in Washington DC this week for the IES PI Meeting. This meeting was postponed due to the winter storm that affected a large swath of the country, including the DC metro area. If your trip was cancelled, I hope you are making the most of your time in Eugene. Maybe you are experiencing a relatively slower start to the term or using the time to catch up on projects that need your attention.

For me, winter term is always busy. I suspect that this year will be no different. I appreciate your commitment to our students, our programs, and our community. We have lots going on, so please read on! In particular, I wish to draw your attention to some new student funding opportunities that our development team has put together. This is good news, especially during this admissions season.

Wishing you a lovely rest of your week. Thanks for being in our college. You matter to our collective success and impact.

Warmly,
Laura Lee

Important Changes to Institutional Support Requests for External Fellowships
Vice Provost for Graduate Studies Krista Chronister shares an important message with the campus community:
Graduate student training and research are critical to our success as one of America’s leading research universities. External graduate student fellowships are integral to this success because they provide students with financial support, unique opportunities for professional development, and time to advance their research without work obligations.
Over the past three years the Division of Graduate Studies and Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation have spoken with graduate students, staff, faculty, and administrative leaders and noted opportunities to improve the external fellowship institutional support request process.
Aligned with the principles and goals of Oregon Rising<https://oregonrising.uoregon.edu/>, the following improvements will strengthen our equity-minded approach to considering support requests across colleges, disciplines, and funding agencies, and the quality of information we use to make decisions.
These changes will take effect January 6, 2025 and apply to all institutional support requests submitted on this date and after. Support approved before January 6, 2025 will still be honored.
Key Changes

  * There is no longer a pre-approved list or automatic approvals for support. Institutional support for the external fellowships listed previously on the pre-approved list will be prioritized, but not automatically approved. The pre-approved list was eliminated to give the institution greater flexibility to consider funding priorities across colleges, disciplines, and funding agencies over time.

  * Institutional support requests must be submitted 30 days prior to the fellowship proposal submission deadline. Review or approval of institutional support requests submitted after the 30-day deadline cannot be guaranteed.

  * Oversight of the institutional support request process will return to the Division. The webpage to request institutional support and where students can find fellowship information and proposal writing resources is here<https://graduatestudies.uoregon.edu/research>.

  * DGAs/RACs are required to complete and submit institutional support requests. Graduate student PIs may not submit support requests. Students must work closely with their unit DGA/RAC to complete the institutional support request form. The DGA/RAC must verify the information submitted.
Thank you for your attention to these changes and partnering with the Division to improve how we make decisions about external fellowship funding. Starting today, January 6, 2025, graduate student PIs and their departments must follow this new process to guarantee that their institutional support requests are considered.
The Division and OVPRI will send newsletter and email communications about these changes during the month of January to academic and research partners and graduate students.
Please contact me with any questions at vpgradstudies at uoregon.edu<mailto:vpgradstudies at uoregon.edu>.
Thank you,
 Krista Chronister
