Dear COE Community,

Today's Weekly message is especially challenging because it is the day after a general election and the outcomes are affecting many in our community. Today is not a normal Wednesday.

I am navigating my own feelings and I sense the heightened emotions of others - our faculty, staff, and students - as well. We are processing today through the lenses of our unique and shared experiences. Some are experiencing this in the silence of our day-to-day work, or some in solidarity with trusted colleagues and friends. As I process my own feelings about today, I have received some lovely messages from individuals in our community. Messages of hope and feelings related to this day. One that stuck with me was an individual who shared that they loved being about to be authentic and truly "feel" all the feels today. Others expressed gratitude for the community of colleagues they experience. I hope that is true for all and others today. There is power in community and there is strength in knowing we are not alone. We are moving items along (as you can see from my note below) , but we are also taking gentle care to notice what we need. We may be experiencing a whole range of emotions today (and the days ahead) and it's fair to say that we may not all see eye to eye. Those differences make us better and stronger. Reach out to others who may be struggling and be aware of what you need. This is our community; please do find safety, peace, solace, support, and love here. If you have strength, do share it with someone else. If you need strength, we've got you.

A colleague shared the Greater Good Magazine: Science-based Insights for a Meaningful Life that focused on finding your balance during a stressful election season<https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/Resources_for_Finding_Your_Balance_During_Stressful_Election>. The resources for parents and educators immediately jumped out at me as a powerful tool, in fact, a resource that I'm using in my own life. I hope you find the information helpful.

Resources for parents and educators

  * Seven Tips for Talking With Kids About Politics<https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/seven_tips_for_talking_with_kids_about_politics>: Half of American parents don't discuss politics with their children. But research suggests parenting plays a crucial role in political views and participation.
  * Can Social-Emotional Skills Strengthen Democracy?<https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/can_social_emotional_skills_strengthen_democracy>: A new study links student participation in SEL programs to voter participation later in life.
  * How to Help Students Learn to Listen to Each Other's Stories<https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_to_help_students_learn_to_listen_to_each_others_stories>: Interview-based storytelling projects can build active listening skills that increase empathy and foster relationships.

There is power in relationships, community, and connection. I'm so glad you're a part of our College of Education community.

Warmly,
Laura Lee

VPRI Research Seed grants are due January 21, 2025
Research Seed Grants<https://research.uoregon.edu/plan/find-funding/internal-funding-opportunities/research-seed-grant> are designed to support faculty in acquiring preliminary data and developing a competitive proposal for significant external funding. A clear justification of funding need (e.g., mid-career research transition, new research collaboration, etc.) is required, as is a specific target(s) for funding opportunities. Research Development Services (RDS) is available to support faculty in requesting these funds.

Call for Scholarship Application Review Committee
The College of Education's Development Team is responsible for distributing over $1 million of donor-funded scholarships annually to incoming and returning COE students who have applied for COE scholarships. To award scholarships based on academic merit, the College depends on a systematic review of these applications by a committee comprised of faculty and/or staff. Service on this committee counts as college-wide faculty service. And the commitment timeline is short - requiring the review of about 40 applications over three weeks in the second half of February and into March. Please fill out this form<https://forms.office.com/r/pUPmc4Prvw> or contact Andrea Olson, Director of Stewardship and Donor Relations at andreao at uoregon.edu<mailto:andreao at uoregon.edu> to express your interest in serving on this committee or to gain more information by February 10.
