Subject: [AALList] Instruction, political activity and respectful workplace reminders

Dear University of Oregon colleagues,

I am writing to provide an update on the demonstration taking place on campus, and to provide some reminders of resources, guidelines, and expectations for members of our university community. Please share this information with your faculty and staff.

Classroom Instruction
Instructors are reminded of the importance of addressing campus and national issues, when academically appropriate, in an educational context that is thoughtful, respectful, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Courses and office hours should occur in regular, assigned places, not in the encampment, because not all students feel comfortable, safe, or willing to engage there. Thus, please follow these principles about UO-scheduled instruction and advising:

  * Class Schedules: Classes should be held at the time and place posted in the course schedule to ensure consistency, safety, and accessibility for all students.
  * Office Hours: Office hours should be conducted in unit-assigned spaces or virtually to maintain an equitable, accessible, and welcoming environment for students.
The Office of the Provost also offers teaching-related support to instructors through the Teaching Engagement Program<https://teaching.uoregon.edu/>, including our Trauma Informed Pedagogy resource<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/t.e2ma.net/click/4o9ydi/83nj8g/wmunu6__;!!C5qS4YX3!CODQf7SCC0i8arD68Ljt_RyXYQNLfT3YBF-vxp4XdVEwsOH_C893HfICBmmZpNKcvGGQ_FDXgabxLK1-YQH1mQ$>, Student Well-being Toolkit<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/t.e2ma.net/click/4o9ydi/83nj8g/cfvnu6__;!!C5qS4YX3!CODQf7SCC0i8arD68Ljt_RyXYQNLfT3YBF-vxp4XdVEwsOH_C893HfICBmmZpNKcvGGQ_FDXgabxLK0H_zBg8Q$>, and Teaching in Turbulent Times Toolkit<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/t.e2ma.net/click/4o9ydi/83nj8g/s7vnu6__;!!C5qS4YX3!CODQf7SCC0i8arD68Ljt_RyXYQNLfT3YBF-vxp4XdVEwsOH_C893HfICBmmZpNKcvGGQ_FDXgabxLK3tRjvPfw$>.

Employee Activities
As a public institution, and a university that values diverse perspectives and civic engagement, we want to reinforce expectations related to expressing a political position or supporting political activity while maintaining a respectful workplace. Staff, faculty, graduate employees, student employees, and supervisors are expected to work together to create a respectful working and learning environment. Please be aware of the following guidance and policies:

  * Political Activity: Employees may express their views but should not actively promote or oppose political views while teaching or at work. A reminder of these obligations was sent to campus on April 23 and can be found on the Human Resources website<https://hr.uoregon.edu/respectful-workplace-notice>.
  * Institutional Resources: Employees should not provide or use institutional resources (printing, fiscal, supplies, etc.) to benefit, advance, or support a particular political position or activity.
  * Respectful Workplace: We recognize that concerns about current events can lead to stress. It is important to be respectful in our interactions and not express ourselves in ways that are demeaning, threatening, or verbally abusive. Please visit the Respectful Workplace Notice webpage<https://hr.uoregon.edu/respectful-workplace-notice> for additional information and resources.
Resources and Support

We encourage anyone with concerns or who may need support to reach out for help using the many resources available across campus. In an emergency, call 9-1-1. To report a criminal concern, contact the UO Police Department at 541-346-2919.

The Free Speech and Safety at UO website<https://freespeech.uoregon.edu/> offers a comprehensive list of resources available to faculty, staff, and students. We continue to update the Frequently Asked Questions page<https://freespeech.uoregon.edu/frequently-asked-questions> with new information. Additional statements or alerts will be published to this page or sent to campus as necessary.

Sincerely,

Karen Ford
Interim Provost and Senior Vice President
