Good afternoon,

A critical security vulnerability has been discovered with Microsoft Outlook on Windows devices that will require updating Microsoft Office for Windows by Tuesday evening, March 21st, at 8:00 p.m. Please note that it is critically important that we address this vulnerability as soon as possible to ensure security of your computer and data.

Patching your computer only requires updating Office for Windows and the directions for how to do this are described below. Given the relatively small number of User Support Services staff we have available and the short timeline, please try to update Office for Windows yourself by following the directions below. If you run into any issues, you can contact us by opening a support ticket through the UO Service Portal (https://service.uoregon.edu) and we are happy to assist. Thanks!

Managed and Unmanaged Computers

If your Windows computer is "managed", it means you see a green and white background on your screen with "USS" in large capital letters when you sign in to use your computer. If you do not see that when you sign in, your computer is unmanaged.

Please follow the respective directions below for managed and unmanaged computers.

For Managed Computers

This update will close all running Microsoft Office applications and may require a reboot for some users.
To install this update immediately:

  1. Open Software Center<https://service.uoregon.edu/TDClient/2030/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=104898#open>.

  1. Navigate to the Updates section.

  1. Select the Office update - or to minimize restarts - you can select Install All. Your computer will need to reboot after the patches are installed.
If you take no action, the update will be automatically installed on your device Tuesday evening and your device may reboot.

For unmanaged University computers or home devices:

  1. Open any Office app, such as Word, and create a new document.
  2. Go to File > Account (or Office Account if you opened Outlook).
  3. Under Product Information, choose Update Options > Update Now.
Note: You may need to click Enable Updates first if you don't see the Update Now option right away.
[Manually checking for Office updates in Word 2016]

  1. Close the "You're up to date!" window after Office is done checking for and installing updates.

Thank you for your assistance in keeping your device secure. We apologize for any inconvenience this may present.
For more information about Software Center, please see the Microsoft Software Center - Installing Applications and Updates<https://service.uoregon.edu/TDClient/2030/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=104898> in the UO Service Portal.

Best,

Ken
