Dear COE Faculty and Staff Community,

I hope you are experiencing the excitement of hiring season in academia. Last week the Ballmer Institute, College of Education, and Department of Psychology came together to host 12 phenomenal prospective tenure track faculty during a 2-day symposium event. The talks were attended by many COE faculty and students. Thanks to those who attended, volunteered to participate in lunches and dinners, and engaged with our prospective colleagues. The vision for the 2-day symposium came from COE Professor Beth Stormshak and Psychology Professor Jenn Pfeifer, along with the search committee comprised of COE and Psychology faculty. Special thanks to Geovanna Rodriguez, Nichole Kelley, John Seeley, and Beth Stormshak for representing the College of Education so capably on this committee. Our joint effort and collaboration with Psychology is fundamental to the success of the Ballmer Institute and I am grateful to a COE full of collaborators and disciplinary partners!

This week we continue our COE faculty interviews. Yesterday we interviewed a candidate for the Assistant Professor in Applied Prevention and Health Promotion<https://careers.uoregon.edu/cw/en-us/job/530175> search in the Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services. Please review the colloquium for Dr. Travis Moore and provide feedback via this Qualtrics survey by Friday, January 20th at 3pm. https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6f1dX1vkycwo5AG

Today I had the privilege of notifying 18 of our wonderful faculty and staff that they have been recognized by their peers as a COE Community Builder. The COE DEI Community sought nominations for faculty and staff who are especially gifted at building community in large ways through small actions. Our Winter Term COE Community Builders are listed in the Accolades (below). Please take a moment to reach out and show your appreciation for their efforts in cultivating community and fostering a sense of belongingness in our College of Education. I would love to see this list grow and we will seek additional nominations for COE Community Builders in the spring term.

Finally, I’ll close with a reminder of our upcoming listening session on Friday January 20th. These COE community listening sessions are being scheduled throughout the academic year and are part of an ongoing strategy in the College of Education to support community and continue to foster a sense of belongingness. Community listening sessions emerged from recent sessions with student groups during fall term and are a joint endeavor between the COE dean and the DEI committee with leadership from Assistant Dean for Administration and Equity and Inclusion, Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann. Separate listening sessions are planned for various employee and student groups as well as identity groups. Our intention is that these sessions will help foster a sense of community and cultivate trust. We are especially interested in hearing about what’s working well (so we don’t mess that up) and what areas require attention. Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann is developing a thoughtful and inclusive schedule for these meetings and we truly look forward to meeting with you, listening to what’s on your mind, and evolving together with the aim of improving our community and climate as well as accelerating the impact of our work.

Thanks for joining me on this journey.

Warmly,
Laura Lee
