Dear COE faculty and staff,

Please do not let the brevity of this email suggest that things have slowed down in the College of Education or across campus. It is, in fact, just the opposite. Our faculty and staff have quickened the pace to serve students as we approach the middle of the term. Now, nearing the end of Week 4, the honeymoon phase may be wearing off for our new students and fatigue and challenges may already be kicking in across the board. This is the point at which imposter syndrome may even start to rear its head as students contemplate the expectations of the weeks ahead. As we support our students through this phenomenon, keep in mind that imposter syndrome is not a trivial experience for all students. Although higher education is certainly rife with opportunities for imposter syndrome (and many of us will grapple with some version of imposter syndrome at some point in our academic careers), the impact of imposter syndrome affects people differently. Our goal is that no one feel like imposters here. Rather than trivializing imposter syndrome or suggesting that we live with it, let us look for ways to affirm our sense of belonging. In addition to noticing students' academic, social, and emotional strengths and pointing them out, we can support students to help them to identify the concrete challenges they are facing and point them toward tangible resources (graduate student supports<https://graduatestudies.uoregon.edu/onestop> ; undergraduate student supports<https://onestop.uoregon.edu/>).

Supporting our students and supporting each other remain a critical priority for our College.

Switching gears completely...Faculty searches are underway, both in the COE and the Ballmer Institute. Many of our COE faculty are serving on these important committees. The recruitment and retention of faculty and staff are top priorities, and the work of these committees is critical to our mission. Thank you to all involved. The Curriculum Committee has launched their activities this year and it is shaping up to be a busy fall term. Thank you, Alison Schmitke, for so capably leading the College of Education in your leadership role chairing the Curriculum Committee. Among the important work of the Curriculum Committee is to review the COE's proposal for a major overhaul to our Ed Leadership programs. I wish to extend my appreciation to the many faculty who have volunteered their time to provide valuable feedback on the Ed Leadership proposal. Our work is ongoing and we are committed to continuous program improvements. Faculty shared governance is key to our success. The work of the Faculty Personnel Committee will also soon be underway. I am grateful to the faculty who devote their time and expertise to the important work of promotion and tenure (and thanks to Chris Murray for assembling a strong committee). Our College is better because of the important work that the FPC does.

Tomorrow I will meet with our department heads and continue to discuss concrete ways of improving our College of Education climate. We have an opportunity to reset and think of ways to improve transparency, inclusion, and equity in our work.

It is a privilege to work with committed community of COE faculty and staff. Thank you each one for the role you play.

Warmly,
Laura Lee
