coe-staff: Community Safety

Dear COE Community,

We learned of an incident that occurred yesterday that involved an individual who entered (or attempted to enter) several COE spaces and acted in a manner that raised safety concerns for the students, faculty, and staff in those spaces. UOPD was called and the incident was safely resolved.

The incident reminds us that despite enjoying regular stretches of relative physical safety, it is important for us all to:

  *   Stay vigilant for incidents that have the potential to escalate, and
  *   Regularly refresh our knowledgebase around the various protocols, resources, and guidelines that are in place for our own safety and for the safety of our community.

In April of this year, the COE held a safety briefing that covered some of the issues that may occur in spaces like ours. There is also additional information in the form of safety videos, materials, and guidance available here https://safety.uoregon.edu/active-threat that is worth reviewing regularly. This latter site also includes specific guidance for faculty (such as syllabus language), as well as information about personal safety.
