Dear COE faculty and staff,
It’s been a monumental week…and it’s only Wednesday!
On Monday, the University of Oregon observed Indigenous Peoples Day<https://twitter.com/UOEducationDean/status/1579569378324283393>. I hope you were able to participate in one of the events on campus<https://twitter.com/uoregon/status/1579654784587804674> and I invite you to join me, this week and throughout the year, in recognizing and celebrating the incredible contributions of our Indigenous colleagues, students, and community members. The University also announced a new initiative, the Home Flight Scholars program<https://homeflight.uoregon.edu/>, which will waive tuition and fees and provide services for Oregon tribal members. The program, designed in consultation with the UO Native American Advisory Council, is poised to make a long-term, positive impact for American Indian/Alaskan Native students and I am glad to see more initiatives of this kind developing at UO. You can learn more about Home Flight Scholars on UO’s social media channels and on their new website<https://homeflight.uoregon.edu/>. I wish to express my appreciation to our COE colleagues who have worked tirelessly to support Indigenous students through the Sapsik’ʷałá Program<https://education.uoregon.edu/sapsikwala>, a program that has been in existence for 20 years and has supported over 109 American Indian and Alaska Native teacher candidates in becoming professional educators. Thank you for the important leadership you are demonstrating.
Now that classes are in full swing (#Week3), our students may be feeling the pressures of coursework and life in general. As our new students onboard and acclimatize to the University and to the College, and our returning students reacquaint themselves with the flow of the typical college day, be on the lookout for students who may need a little extra support or guidance. Our International Students in particular are navigating a host of logistical details in addition to their course loads and workloads. If you haven’t already, consider scheduling an extra meeting session for your International advisees to check in on their progress, their needs, and questions. While you’re at it, please also thank our COE GEs for their amazing work and dedication to the College of Ed. And not to be forgotten, please also express your appreciation to our dedicated, thoughtful group of COE advisors<https://education.uoregon.edu/student-academic-services> and Student Academic Services personnel. One last resource I’ll share is the UO’s One Stop<https://onestop.uoregon.edu/?utm_source=banner-module&utm_campaign=banner> page on the website. One Stop is full of great information and resources to support our student community.
As you join me in creating and fostering a sense of belonginess and community for our students, please also take good care of yourself and your colleagues. Our College is worth investing in.
Warmly,
Laura Lee
Updates and Upcoming:
* University Resources for Students: The University of Oregon, Dean of Students Office recently launched its Basic Needs program<https://basicneeds.uoregon.edu/> to address some of the recurring basic needs that our students may face while in our programs. Share this resource regularly with your students regardless of need, so that they are aware of the supports available to them and their peers in the event that a need arises. As a reminder, the University has a variety of supportive resources for students such as the University’s Counseling Services<https://counseling.uoregon.edu/letstalk> and the Dean of Students’ Care and Advocacy program<https://dos.uoregon.edu/help>.
* DEI Committee Nominations: This quarter, the College of Education DEI committee is requesting nominations for four new committee members. The committee has been an official “ad hoc” committee since Fall 2020 and seeks representation from across all academic departments as well as membership representing our research units. DEI Committee members participate in constructive, solution-oriented discussion and planning based on their own expertise and experience, as well as on their consultation with colleagues and experts in their respective units. DEI committee members commit to growing outside of meetings, to bringing and sharing relevant resources and updates, and to sharing progress outwardly in their respective units.
The committee is charged with developing and supporting an action-oriented equity framework that supports and mobilizes expertise in the college community towards improving the climate for all and ensuring that students, faculty, and staff from typically underrepresented populations have access to supports, mentorship, and advocacy that is free from discrimination.
DEI meetings are held once a month for 60 – 90 minutes, and may require up to 60 minutes of electronic engagement between meetings. To nominate yourself or other please email Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann dcarriza at uoregon.edu<mailto:dcarriza at uoregon.edu> or submit your nomination via the survey here: New DEI Committee Nomination<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9TvOAxkjSDz7gwu>.
* Halloween Potluck: Get your ghouls and goblins on for the return of the Halloween Potluck with optional Halloween Costume Contest. If you want to bring a potluck dish, please email Lisa at lfortin at uoregon.edu<mailto:lfortin at uoregon.edu> to let us know what you’ll be bringing. Contest participants will be able to submit entries remotely with the vote taking place on October 31. Details on where to submit your photo will be shared closer to the event. If this is not “your thing”, take a pass, but if you’re “all in”, see you there!
