Dear COE community,

On days like today, when we are grieving the loss of children, teachers, and community members murdered in senseless acts of violence, it's hard to stay focused, to be patient, to feel secure, or to find peace. Many of you joined me today outside the Hedco Education Building at 11:32 AM (the time the shooting broke out at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas yesterday) for a moment of silence and to share in our grief, horror, anger, and disbelief regarding these horrific acts of violence. We are still reeling from the racist acts of murder in a Buffalo, New York supermarket, and are grieving the racially motivated death of George Floyd 2 years ago this day. There are so many horrors that words and tears just can't describe.

I thank you for coming together with me as a community and finding connection, love, and care in the support of one another. I thank faculty for creating space and extra time for students and for being vulnerable and sharing in our collective humanity. I thank staff for supporting one another, students, and our community. Take the time you need to nurture yourselves and those around you. For those of you who were not able to attend our community event today, the Register Guard captured the sentiment in this short piece. https://www.registerguard.com/story/news/2022/05/25/university-of-oregon-texas-school-shooting-victims-uvalde/65357503007/<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.registerguard.com/story/news/2022/05/25/university-of-oregon-texas-school-shooting-victims-uvalde/65357503007/__;!!C5qS4YX3!ANZ8_fV8RoHpRqivqSJh5PypD_AyaDLqR2xweK_UtdUzn4QAo-mHk3yNp79wQ91tVTOOT30iBCI-ahyHOeiOYxE$>

For anyone in need of processing their personal experiences, please reach out to University Counseling Services (counseling.uoregon.edu) where there are services for students and employees. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength and shows courage and compassion to take care of yourself, or assist a colleague, student, or friend. The resources and supports are confidential and no or low cost.

Thank you for coming together for our students, ourselves, and our community. We are stronger together.

Take gentle care,

Laura Lee

Updates and Upcoming:

  * Faculty and Staff Headshots: On Friday, June 3rd, COE Communications is hosting a spring outdoor professional headshot photo opportunity for faculty and staff. If you do not currently have a headshot, or would like to update yours, please RSVP<https://forms.gle/b9gNfFXi6PcB3dFs8> and select a timeslot that works best for you. There are limited spots available. The headshots will be taken outside the HEDCO Education Building. Specific location details TBA. Business casual dress is preferred. If you have any questions, please email Emily Barker at ebarker8 at uoregon.edu<mailto:ebarker8 at uoregon.edu>.

  * Cybersecurity Awareness Training: The Information Security Office has launched a new online training in cybersecurity and will begin conducting simulated email phishing educational campaigns for UO faculty members, staff, graduate employees and student employees. The training, called "UO Cybersecurity Basics," is available to all employees through MyTrack<https://uomytrack.pageuppeople.com/Dock.aspx>. It consists of three groups of short video modules on topics such as passwords, email, devices, multifactor authentication, remote work and data handling. More information about the training<https://service.uoregon.edu/TDClient/2030/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=140418> is available in the UO Service Portal. Soon UO employees also will start to receive simulated phishing emails as part of an effort to raise awareness and provide education about avoiding scams. Those simulations will imitate the techniques of real phishing attacks<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/phishing-texts-and-emails-target-uo-community-fall-surge>, such as asking for passwords, enticing the reader to click a link or pressuring the recipient to make a fraudulent wire transfer. They may also include the names and logos of familiar companies. However, unlike in a real phishing scam, a click on one of UO's simulated phishing emails will lead the recipient to an informational webpage about phishing. The two new efforts are among those begun in 2019<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/t.e2ma.net/click/w2ea6f/83ryih/0pj8e1__;!!C5qS4YX3!GhTikhvfg06TARgbq4YFBUo25voa1_ZvtFtZ2JXf7ju12gUaqzARkhzBcZXEaBChaIz130ECeP8h5FB9i2qJJQ$> to safeguard the UO community against cyberattacks.

  * Employee Demographic Data Collection: Improvements and updates to DuckWeb, the University of Oregon's online information system, now allows employees to voluntarily provide additional demographic information in support of the UO's commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity. Employees can now voluntarily provide their gender identity and sexual orientation by completing a new form in DuckWeb<https://duckweb.uoregon.edu/duckweb/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin>. While logged in, employees can provide, update, or change other demographic information as well as review their address and emergency contact information. In the future, employees will also be able to voluntarily report their preferred pronouns. More information will be shared when this option becomes available. The university collects demographic and biographical information on a voluntary basis in compliance with federal and state laws and requirements mandated by the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission. The information is used for aggregate reporting purposes within the university and to meet compliance requirements. Individual information is not shared with UO departments, managers or supervisors, and it is not used in employment decisions. It is the policy<https://policies.uoregon.edu/vol-5-human-resources/ch-11-human-resources-other/prohibited-discrimination-and-retailiation> of the university to maintain an environment free of discrimination against any person because of their real or perceived "protected characteristic," which includes race, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability and veteran status, among others. University employees are protected by federal and state laws and university policies. The Office of Investigations and Civil Rights Compliance is responsible for investigating and responding to incidents of prohibited discrimination and harassment, including those based on gender, race, age or any other protected class. The office's website<http://investigations.uoregon.edu/> provides important information about reporting processes and obligations
