Dear COE Community,

I would like to add my voice by thanking those who were able to come together today in such a genuine show of support, outrage, grief, and shared community around the most recent senseless act and around senseless acts in general.

I echo the spoken sentiments today as well as the community sentiment that could be felt so palpably in the silent but laden spaces between and among us. I appreciated the words from Laura Lee's message that have already been captured by our community newspaper https://www.registerguard.com/story/news/2022/05/25/university-of-oregon-texas-school-shooting-victims-uvalde/65357503007/

With gratitude for the leadership that brought us together, and with sorrow for the heartbreaking losses that created the need for that space.

Dianna

Subject: coe-staff: Mass Shootings - Moment of Silence Today at 11:32 AM
Importance: High

Dear colleagues,

The College of Education mourns the loss of children, teachers, and community members murdered in senseless acts of violence - most recently at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas where 19 children (2nd - 4th grade) and two teachers were gunned down and killed. The terror and the horror of these crimes are jarring to our community and rock our sense of calm, peace, safety, and security. In an already unsettled time, still reeling from the racist acts of murder in Buffalo, New York's mass shooting of Black community members at a grocery store, the College of Education needs you to come together - for our students, for ourselves, for our sense of loss, sorrow, and grief, and for each other.

Today, please consider taking a pause at 11:32 AM (the time the shootings broke out yesterday). Join your community outside in the courtyard outside Hedco Education building if you wish. If we are a large group, we'll move to the Gerlinger Lawn. If we are a small group, we'll stay in the courtyard. Bring your students, come alone, come with your office mates, or stay put - at home, at your desk, or wherever you find your peace.

Please join us to find comfort in each other's presence and find the space to grieve and acknowledge the horrific, unspeakable acts of violence. We will not be numb to these acts.

We have asked University Counseling Center staff to be on hand to provide support for those in need. Please consider providing space and time in your classes to talk with students, acknowledge the harm, injustice, and hurt, and provide resources to those who are struggling.

As a community, please consider joining me outside today in the courtyard at 11:32 AM.

With a heavy heart, but arms wide open,
Laura Lee
