College of Education (COE)
Equity & Inclusion Committee Newsletter
Thank you for your enthusiastic response to the Fall introduction of the COE Equity and Inclusion Newsletter. We hope to continue to provide you with relevant updates about the individual and joint efforts underway in the college as you engage in your own unique equity journeys this quarter. As usual, if you have ideas, initiatives, recommendations, or resources that you would like posted on the DEI website or shared as part of the Quarterly Newsletter, please submit those to the survey<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2nw2w6vJl6A50J8__;!!C5qS4YX3!W61RiJI3TbPG5WyedlkPJ4K4QAp4YjVr0hWTArGtoZBSkjUHd91bkH0B45z007QgqA$> or email dcarriza at uoregon.edu<mailto:dcarriza at uoregon.edu>.
Strategic Focus Areas Updates
[https://files.constantcontact.com/e2afc7af701/36ecc31a-0c23-446b-8be2-6fb15e88d801.jpg]
The Equity and Inclusion committee<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/committee-members/> continues to work through six (6) Strategic Focus Areas<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/welcome/our-work/> in the COE related to climate and welcomes your thoughts and ideas as we develop concepts for implementation in the college.
Celebration and Visibility<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/celebration-and-visibility-in-the-college-of-education/>
This quarter, as the committee continues to consider the most ideal ways our college can authentically celebrate our diversity, we will join the university community in recognizing national heritage months<https://inclusion.uoregon.edu/multicultural-calendar-0>. We look forward to sharing activities for Black History Month<https://inclusion.uoregon.edu/bhm> (February), Women’s History Month (March), and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (March). We welcome your ideas for meaningful ways to bring visibility to the differences and similarities that unite us.
Professional Development (PD)<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/coe-professional-development-opportunities/>
Consistent with the decisions made last quarter, the COE has begun to identify a limited series of equity and inclusion training opportunities for joint and individual participation in the college. An initial set of options is available on the University of Oregon LinkedIn Learning website which can be found on the Professional Development in the COE<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/coe-professional-development-opportunities/> page along with additional opportunities which we have begun to consolidate for COE use.
COE Equity Briefs<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/coe-equity-briefs/>
Equity Briefs As topics arise we have begun to curate and compile a repository of Equity briefs related to items within the six strategic areas and to topics that come up regularly in the COE. Go to the COE Equity Briefs page<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/coe-equity-briefs/> to see the current briefs.
Black History Month
[https://files.constantcontact.com/e2afc7af701/46979c72-561b-4866-91d7-68bed43a9bd6.jpg]
The University is hosting a wide array of events and opportunities in recognition of Black History Month. Visit the Division of Equity and Inclusion website<https://inclusion.uoregon.edu/bhm> to learn about events happening across campus.
Within the COE we hope you will be willing to “Design a slide for the digital screen”!
Individual departments, units, programs, teams, or individuals are invited to show how they are recognizing or highlighting Black History Month in their work by designing a slide for the digital computer screens that are up around our college and for a slide show that will be posted to the DEI website.
If you have any particular activities, research, programming, faculty, service, history item or other content that you’d like to share to indicate how your program is recognizing Black History Month, download a pre-branded PowerPoint slide template by logging into the University Communications Downloads<https://communications.uoregon.edu/brand/downloads> page and design your slide to be powerful, interesting, impactful, respectful, memorable or all of the above. Upload your completed slide here<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/uoregon-my.sharepoint.com/:f:/r/personal/mariahrd_uoregon_edu/Documents/Black*20History*20Month*20Slide*20Submission?csf=1&web=1&e=daxx2k__;JSUlJQ!!C5qS4YX3!Xe-s67acRcCaj3vXLHwzx_DWXmwU3W-EXj3Ps9Xfx-F2vlJLySgF7M_gb53CQ7M_oA%24> or email it to dcarriza at uoregon.edu<mailto:dcarriza at uoregon.edu>. Include your unit name (or acronym), BHM, and the last name of the point of contact in the file name. Slides will be accepted until February 18th, 2022 and a winner will be announced!
College of Education Equity Forum
[https://files.constantcontact.com/e2afc7af701/0a8d93d0-8c5c-49b4-9a69-ade72c3b0934.jpg]
The COE Equity Forum<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/college-of-education-equity-forum/> is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to extend their experience with the content from the COE Equity Challenge that was hosted this past Fall. Similar to the COE Equity Challenge, the COE Equity forum will consist of pre-curated materials of varying lengths that will be made available for community use and interspersed with regular opportunities for shared discourse and discussion. Both the Forum and the Challenge are based off the 21-Day Equity Challenge which was created by Dr. Eddie Moore Jr. (#BlackMind) and co-developed with Debby Irving, and Dr. Marguerite Penick (#DiverseSolutions). The COE Equity Forum will be refreshed with additional materials and updated to spread participation out over the course of the remainder of the Winter and Spring quarters (February 1st – June 15th, 2022).
The COE Equity Forum discussion groups will be combined with the launch of our Courageous Conversations series.
Courageous Conversations
[https://files.constantcontact.com/e2afc7af701/8760b17d-e475-41a0-9e1d-555bb5ba5f3c.jpg]
As a means of coming together as a community, to discuss relevant issues, and to explore topics of equity and inclusion raised in the COE Equity Forum, the COE will be launching the Courageous Conversations Series in the college. University Level Courageous Conversations<https://inclusion.uoregon.edu/courageous-conversations> have been (and continue to be) in operation at the university level and provide great opportunities to (a) meet like-minded individuals outside of the college and (b) engage in socially meaningful conversation without the pressure of negotiating the professional relationships and power dynamics that are often present in conversations among co-workers! You know they can be. However, the COE Courageous Conversations<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/courageous-conversations-in-the-coe/> will require patience, courage, and humility as we open our hearts and minds to include discussion on topics that touch our community and that influence the climate of the college. This quarter we hope to schedule 2 college-wide sessions in addition to the standing opportunity for discourse at the faculty and staff meeting.

If there is a critical mass or minimal interest in any one of these readings, we can work with those interested to create discussion groups made up of interested participants.
Winter Faculty Picks
Many faculty may encounter readings that delve into advanced or specialized areas of equity and inclusion that may not have immediate implications for the entire community but may have a specific value for faculty in a specific discipline or subdiscipline or engaged in areas of research or instruction that appeal to a smaller group. If you have faculty picks that fit that description, please include it as a suggestion<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/i-have-a-suggestion/> for our faculty picks page.

The SOURCE<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/source/2020/02/20/home/> student group reconvened this Fall with new students and a continued mission. SOURCE meetings though designed in support of students from typically underrepresented groups are open to all students. Please send your students to the following page, or direct them to opt-in to updates, information, and zoom invitations by indicating their interest in attending SOURCE meetings<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9FVihJ4jwRfgpi6__;!!C5qS4YX3!TdcwlHuhREkMv6AEqwfFlvehoL251Y_C4yriTc3mhFtUi5mlswFy4Uafq1gBQsaPGQ%24> here.
Your Involvement
We will continue to look for ongoing opportunities to keep the community involved in the momentum in these areas and welcome feedback and input as we grow this together.
I Have a Suggestion!<https://blogs.uoregon.edu/coediversityequityinclusion/i-have-a-suggestion/>
The COE is constantly looking for nimble tools, evidence-based activities, and inclusive ideas to implement as we support these focus areas and other related work within the college. Please reach out to Dianna Carrizales Engelmann<https://education.uoregon.edu/directory/faculty/all/dcarriza> at dcarriza at uoregon.edu<mailto:dcarriza at uoregon.edu> or to your unit’s committee member if you believe something you are working on in your department or program links to one of the strategic focus areas and warrants consideration for college-wide implementation.
Your Work
We would love to include and consider all of the work that you are each engaged in as we discuss and promote the work we are all engaged in. Please share your work with us for inclusion in a future newsletter.
