Hello, UO leaders, movers, and shakers,

Would you please share the following message with your departments?

UO housing is at capacity for fall, and they are not able to host our exchange students. The American English Institute currently has eight students needing placements starting in fall, including three students arriving Friday. If you, or someone you know and trust, has a room or two available, I’d love to talk with them!

The UO’s AEI Intensive English Program<https://aei.uoregon.edu/> is welcoming a large group undergraduate students for fall term. Due the large incoming freshman class this fall, there are not enough rooms in the UO residence halls so our students must find alternate housing. We are short several rooms for these wonderful students. Students pay the host family a $750 stipend per month, or $25 per day for prorated months. If you are interested, please keep reading!

Students start arriving Friday, August 26 through Sunday, September 25 and stay through March or June. If you are interested but only available for fall term and not beyond, a large group of students will be leaving in mid-December, so I could assign a second family to the students.

Our program is a homestay program, not a rental or room and board situation.

· You provide snacks, food the student can prepare for breakfast and dinner six nights per week. You also provide food the student can prepare for lunch on weekends, but not during the week. They are responsible for their own lunches during the week.

· Students need a private bedroom with bed, desk, lamp and linens (towels, sheets, etc.). They can share a bathroom.  They provide their own personal items.

· Utilities are part of the stipend. Having internet service to your home is necessary.

· You need to be in the Eugene/Springfield area and be willing to include your student in family activities. The students who come to the AEI are here to study English and choose homestay to practice with native speakers and also learn about our culture and family life.

· You need to be close to a bus stop and close enough to the University so that the student is within about 45-60 minutes from your home to the University by bus. The bus needs to provide service until at least 10:00 p.m. These are young adults, and they will want to be able to study in the library, take advantage of the Rec Center, and socialize with their friends.

· You meet the student at the airport when they arrive and deliver them to the airport at the end of their program, if they are still living with you.

· You include the student in family gatherings, on sightseeing adventures, and in community events.

If you are interested, or you know someone who might be, please contact Cheryl Ernst (cheryle at uoregon.edu<mailto:cheryle at uoregon.edu> or 6-2911) or visit https://aei.uoregon.edu/hostfamily for more information. I’m happy to answer any questions that arise.

Our families are a true sample of US demographics. These programs build incredible relationships and provide students with a snapshot of American life and create memories that do last a lifetime. Hosting is truly soft diplomacy in action.

All the best,
Cheryl
