Dear Faculty and Staff,
For your potential interest, this ARTICLE<https://www.the74million.org/one-year-into-pandemic-far-fewer-young-students-are-on-target-to-learn-how-to-read-tests-show/> featured the use of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) for the purposes of assessing learning loss attributable to the impact of the pandemic on schooling practices.
In addition, the University Council on Educational Administration<http://www.ucea.org/> (UCEA) responded to the confirmation of Dr. Miguel Cardona as new US Secretary of Education. See attached.
And, I wish to thank the “news team” of Amanda Boehringer, who assembles the first draft for each issue of The Weekly. Please continue to share your important content with us.
Regards,
Randy
Reminders:
* Global Education (GEO) Study Abroad Faculty-led Program: April 1 is the deadline to apply to propose new (or repeat existing) faculty-led study abroad programs in summer 2022 and beyond. See the attached flyer for more information.

* Tiffany Yep, Business Manager, was featured in the Around the O Article<https://around.uoregon.edu/content/supporting-faculty-and-staff-create-positive-student-experiences-0?utm_source=ato03-02-21&utm_campaign=workplace> highlighting how she supports faculty and staff to create positive student experiences. * Years of Service Recognition: I am pleased to recognize COE staff who have achieved important work anniversaries. The attached list includes staff who celebrated 5, 10, 15, or 20 years of service. Thank you, all, for everything you do for our students, our institution, and each other.
* A number of units and individuals received external funding awards. Well done, all.
* The Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect (CPAN) and the Oregon Research Schools Network (ORSN) received funding to partner with the South Coast Educational Service District (SCESD) in support of SCESD’s implementation of trauma-informed school practices.
* CPAN also received funding from the Ford Family Foundation to conduct an evaluation of Protect Our Children (POC) sites. The project will also work on an online facilitated POC training, a strategic campaign to communicate POC findings, training and technical assistance, and presentations.
* ORSN also received funding to work with the Oregon Association of Education Service Districts (OAESD) to create a position statement on equity and racial justice. The statement will help guide the work of the Association (19 ESDs) and provide concrete recommendations for actions.
* Finally, ORSN was funded to provide professional development and support for paraeducators in Lane ESD supported school districts. The funding allows many paraeducators to receive digital micro professional development (micro-pd) training and support modules from the College of Education. Topics range from remote work of educational assistants to effective trauma-informed education, building relationships, positive behavior strategies, and instructional support strategies.
* PI Michelle M. Jacob has received funding for Sapsik'ʷała Grow Your Own Project from the Oregon Department of Education. The project will deepen recruitment efforts to mentor Indigenous high school students and undergraduates from across the state. The goal is supporting them academically while also strengthening their identities as future Indigenous K-12 teachers. The project partners with the Nine Federally Recognized Tribes across Oregon and invites contributions from many additional Tribes.
* PI Joanna Goode has been funded to oversee the educational research associated with the online “Exploring Computer Science” (ECS) professional development program. As an expert on inclusive pedagogy and professional development, she will help support the teacher needs associated with Exploring Computer Science, a curriculum which she helped develop, including the technical needs associated with online workshops for teachers.
* PI Bertranna Muruthi has been funded by the Lane ESD to work on African American/Black student success. The work entails designing a survey, conducting focus groups, and analyzing multiple methods data. The instrument will be for use with parents of African American students within the Lane ESD districts.
* The COE is receiving funding from the State of Oregon to operationalize plans to create more culturally affirming environments for Black, Indigenous, and Students of Color (BISoC). The funding will allow the COE to work more on their Educator Equity Plans that detail the recruitment, selection, retention, and graduation of diverse educators.
* The Leadership and Administrative Skills (LEADS) Minor received mention in the campus mid-term self-report for accreditation with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). LEADS was named by the provost’s office in the “Campus initiatives and significant accomplishments” section right after the Knight campus launch. Congratulations to the EMPL faculty.
