Dear Faculty and Staff,
Our researchers close the research and development loop. More than virtually all of our peers, our researchers are unusually skilled at translating our research into policy action and practice change, and we develop products of proven value for improving the educational trajectories of children and youth. In fact, Eugene/Springfield is one of the few communities that has an EduTech business sector (see 2013 report attached) that contributes significant economic activity to the area. Much of this economic impact can be traced to the work of COE researchers.
The latest evidence of the impact is in evidence this week at the U.S. Department of Education’s annual ED Games Expo, which runs today through Saturday. See brochure attached and information at https://ies.ed.gov/sbir/2021EdGamesExpo.asp. There are many live events (thought they will be archived) and the federally-funded learning games and technologies video are featured here: https://ies.ed.gov/sbir/2021EdGamesExpoVideos.asp. At least 7 COE/UO products are featured: KinderTEK, MOCCA, MOCCA-College, Escolar, Numbershire, The TIPS Mapp, and STELLAR. Please join me in offering congratulations to the creators and their research teams.
I look forward to seeing everyone on Friday.
Randy
Accolades:
* David Liebowitz received an NAEd/Spencer Research Development Award: https://naeducation.org/2021-naed-spencer-research-development-awardees/, and a sub-contract (~$150K) from the American Institutes for Research to co-lead part of the evaluation of the Networks for School Improvement initiative—a Gates Foundation-backed network of schools doing continuous improvement work: https://usprogram.gatesfoundation.org/what-we-do/k-12-education/networks-for-school-improvement. Congratulations, David.
* COE offers Anti-Racism Course to area teachers: Washington Ethnic Studies Now in collaboration with the UO COE, with funding provided by the Educator Advancement Council, is offering a professional development series (see syllabus attached), on critical race theory, culturally sustaining pedagogies, and ethnic studies during three class sessions to be offered virtually via Zoom scheduled from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. June 22, 23, and 24, 2021. Teachers, mostly from 4J and Springfield districts, will be provided with professional development units and a stipend upon completion of the course and $200 in books and materials for their classroom. The goal across the three days will be to actively involve participants in the exploration of race and critical consciousness and to incorporate these new concepts into professional practice. Currently, there are 75 teachers participating and over 100 teachers on the waitlist. Thank you to Lillian Durán, Brady Nittmann, Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann, Julie Wren, and all who have led this work.
* Jennifer Ruef’s article "Regarding schools, what's worth keeping?"<https://www.registerguard.com/story/opinion/columns/2021/05/27/guest-view-regarding-schools-whats-worth-keeping-education-pandemic/7432951002/> was featured in The Register Guard. Thanks for providing this public service, Jennifer.
* Sarah Stapleton is serving on the Faculty Advisory Committee to help advance for the work of the Environment Initiative (EI-FAC). You can see the campus engagement report here, https://environment.uoregon.edu/about-us, which sets out what they have learned and where they are headed. Thank you, Sarah, for helping to build this important work at the UO and for your willingness to serve.
* We had a number of faculty who received awards as part of the UO’s Outstanding Research Awards program through the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI). Ilana Umanksy received the 2021 Impact Award which is awarded in recognition of outstanding broader public engagement activity, including communication, policy, or outreach. Dave DeGarmo was awarded the 2021 Outstanding Accomplishment NTTF Research Award, which is awarded to a career-track faculty member to recognize and celebrate a substantial and impactful scholarly record on our campus. The COVID-MAP Team, including our own Leslie Leve, received the 2021 Innovation and Impact Award which is given to an outstanding individual or team that distinguished themselves and the university through entrepreneurial activities that resulted in innovations with a measurable societal or environmental impact and/or individuals whose broader public engagement activity has proactively shared their research or viewpoints on research and policy issues with the public via traditional and/or new media channels. Finally, Leslie Leve was also selected for the 2021 Outstanding Career Award, which is the UO’s highest award for faculty to recognize and celebrate a deep and distinguished record of scholarship and research on our campus. Congratulations, Ilana, Dave, and Leslie, on these impressive and well deserved awards.
