Dear Faculty and Staff,

The Biden/Harris administration is fast moving, which is resulting in frequent communication about the administration’s priorities and their implications for higher and K-12 education, early learning, special education, and other education priorities. I forward some of these missives to our department heads through our membership in several national organizations of research university colleges of education. One such group is the LEARN Coalition<https://learncoalition.wordpress.com/>, which we joined about six years ago. The deans of these institutions meet monthly, organize “days on the hill”, and engage in other activities in support of federal sponsorship of education research. Please ask your department heads about legislative or other governmental activities of interest to you. By the way, the LEARN coalition houses a cabal of Oregon-related deans – Lauren Lindstrom, Mia Tuan, Charles Martinez, David Chard, Glenn Good (CPSY masters alum). This roster speaks highly of the leadership of our alums and former faculty.

In addition, Julie Wren and I keep abreast of legislative activities in Salem and coordinate with our university government relations staff. We will also do our best to answer questions.

And, thanks to our many faculty and staff who are working with policy makers with great frequency and effect. It takes the entire collective to monitor and impact the fast changing education policy worlds. Please keep communication flowing among us.

Speaking of education policy, it was a pleasure to join the Network for Equity in Educational Policy (NEEP) organizational meeting last evening and see the impressive list of participants engaged (e.g., ODE, Education Northwest, EC Cares, CDS, ECS, Dept of Linguistics, etc.) and committed to improving educational policy and redressing disparities. This faculty collaborative is poised for great success.

Updates and Upcoming:

  *   Free COVID testing for Latinx communities: See the attached information regarding free Covid-19 testing events for Latinx communities, to be held in Cottage Grove and Springfield. These events will take place every two weeks at the same places starting next week, and continuing through August. Participants do not need to have health insurance or documentation of immigration status.

Accolades:

  *   Two of Lillian Durán’s Division for Early Childhood presentations ended up on the Council for Exceptional Children Facebook site (see attached screenshots). Great job, Lillian!

  *   ORSN, Nancy Golden, Sol Joye, and Jeff Todhal are featured in an article Coos and Curry school districts embark on pilot program<https://www.currypilot.com/news/coos-and-curry-school-districts-embark-on-pilot-program/article_ca02c1ac-6194-11eb-8104-af598b0b446e.html> of the Curry Costal Pilot news. This is a strong article highlighting the partnership between ORSN and the South Coast and their focus on social and emotional learning and trauma informed school practices. Congratulations to the ORSN Team!

Thanks, Gina, for providing us with this premier example of good research dissemination work!
