Many personal, family, and neighborhood factors contribute to a student's academic performance, but a large body of research suggests that, among school-related factors, teachers matter most. Education leaders and researchers are exploring ways to measure teachers' effectiveness through a variety of methods. RAND's Measuring Teacher Effectiveness website provides policymakers, practitioners, and parents with research-based information on the strengths and drawbacks of various approaches.
