Dear Faculty and Staff,
We made it to the end of term. I do, however, sense intense fatigue among us. Please get some rest.
With some rest, and a multitude of accomplishments boosting our confidence (see accolades), the new year holds great promise.
Looking forward to 2021,
Randy
Updates and Upcoming:
* Julie Wren has been diligently working on our US News data report. Much of our data and indicators are stable. For example, Funded Research per TTF Faculty member averaged $963,650 in FY2017, $887,309 in FY2018, and $940,054 in FY2019. Our faculty awards and recognitions, however, increased significantly over previous years. Thanks, Julie, for your fine work on this most challenging task.
* Thank you to all who attended last Friday’s faculty and staff meeting. There were some questions about UO Intellectual Property Policy related to course development. As promised, the full policy can be found at: https://research.uoregon.edu/manage/innovation-impact/uo-internal-directives-intellectual-property. Here are few notes about the policy.
* The policy does address the question about book authorship. It reads, “Except as provided above, the ownership rights to all forms of educational and professional material in the form of books, musical or dramatic composition, architectural designs, paintings, sculptures, or other works of comparable type developed by institution employees, either in conjunction with or aside from their employment, shall accrue to the author, unless the material is prepared in compliance with contractual provisions or as a specific work assignment, or significant institutional resources were utilized. An academic staff person's general obligation to produce scholarly works does not constitute such a specific institution assignment.”
* Department heads raised faculty concerns about continuity of course assignments for newly developed remote courses at our October 8 meeting. Our Faculty Workload Policy Implementation Guidance addresses this question, in part, “All other considerations being equal: a) A faculty member who has taught a class previously because of having relevant research expertise should have priority for that course assignment in the future.”
* I also attaching some FAQs from Carol Gering about on-line course development. Please see # 6 (and #s 4 and 7) related to ownership of course materials.
As Emily Tanner-Smith noted in our meeting, please contact the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation for additional guidance and consultation. Also, your department head can share the details of our discussions with you.
* GE allocations to academic departments are still in flux, for two reasons. First, the students eligible for an extra year of GE support were identified for us on Monday, but appeals can be made in the next few days. As reminder, the GE extension program was described in a December 9 message as, “…the Provost, in collaboration with the GTFF, has agreed to offer an additional 1 year of GE funding to all PhD students who meet the following criteria: (1) PhD students in good academic standing who have not exceeded 6 years in their PhD program by the end of AY 20-21 and (2) currently in their final year of their multi-year funding offer commitment as determined by each program’s regular processes. Programs will need to reserve GE positions from their regular allocations for all eligible PhD students who request an additional year of support.” Second, and related, our university funding for GEs is flat this year at 65. Last year, the college supplemented this number to fund 79 GEs in order to allow our programs to admit a new class of PhD students. We have had many conversations with department heads and others about how we meet an impending funding challenge. I am meeting with College of Arts and Sciences leadership tomorrow to see how they are dealing with their GE funding shortfall and any impacts on PhD admission plans. I hope to announce GE allocations early next week.
Reminders:
* AERA Funding Opportunities: There are two AERA Funding Opportunities with deadlines in the early new year that I wanted to remind you of:
* Education Research Service Projects (ERSP)- Deadline Friday, January 8, 2021. AERA’s Education Research Service Projects (ERSP) program encourages education researchers to offer their pro bono expertise to educational organizations, institutions, or other community groups that have identified and expressed a need for such assistance. The ERSP program provides small grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to defray direct costs involved in these projects. ERSP awards may be used only to defray the direct costs associated with research service, allowing education researchers to contribute their time and expertise and thereby to serve the public good. More information and the full Call for Proposals can be found at: https://www.aera.net/Education-Research/Education-Research-Service-Projects<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.aera.net/Education-Research/Education-Research-Service-Projects__;!!C5qS4YX3!UwLgFAAurNxu0HTYKhcrJqRKYjtNvGtxkwhX5tugH1TZYnCh6gS0mXEjCj8CHvpq$>. Direct any questions about the AERA Education Research Service Projects eligibility requirements or submission process to EdResearch at aera.net<mailto:EdResearchConference at aera.net> or 202-238-3200.
* Education Research Conference Proposals- Deadline: February 26, 2021. The American Educational Research Association (AERA) invites proposals for its Education Research Conference Program. Through this program, AERA awards grants of up to $35,000 for conferences intended to break new ground in substantive areas of inquiry, stimulate new lines of study on issues that have been largely unexplored, or develop innovative research methods or techniques that can contribute more generally to education research. It is anticipated that research conferences will draw upon diverse disciplines and fields of inquiry where there is relevant scientific and scholarly expertise. The program aims to foster the accumulation of knowledge, enhance dissemination, encourage innovation, and advance studies of the highest quality in education research. More information and the full Call for Proposals can be found at: https://www.aera.net/Education-Research/Education-Research-Conferences-Program<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.aera.net/Education-Research/Education-Research-Conferences-Program__;!!C5qS4YX3!UwLgFAAurNxu0HTYKhcrJqRKYjtNvGtxkwhX5tugH1TZYnCh6gS0mXEjCpvhqSOa$>.
