the next few days. As reminder, the GE extension program was described in a December 9 message as, “…the Provost, in collaboration with the GTFF, has agreed to offer an additional 1 year of GE funding to all PhD students who meet the following criteria: (1)
PhD students in good academic standing who have not exceeded 6 years in their PhD program by the end of AY 20-21 and (2) currently in their final year of their multi-year funding offer commitment as determined by each program’s regular processes. Programs
will need to reserve GE positions from their regular allocations for all eligible PhD students who request an additional year of support.” Second, and related, our university funding for GEs is flat this year at 65. Last year, the college supplemented this
number to fund 79 GEs in order to allow our programs to admit a new class of PhD students. We have had many conversations with department heads and others about how we meet an impending funding challenge. I am meeting with College of Arts and Sciences leadership
tomorrow to see how they are dealing with their GE funding shortfall and any impacts on PhD admission plans. I hope to announce GE allocations early next week.
