RESEARCH DRIVING CHANGE

December 2020

Dear Colleagues,

I write this message to you at a perilous time in the course of this pandemic. Vulnerability is the first word that comes to mind as I think about our national and international communities of scholars working in schools and colleges of education.

In this issue we focus on how we meet the needs of children and youth during these unusual schooling circumstances. Stories about mathematics instructional apps and digital science curricula, mental health promotion and addressing the unique challenges faced by children with Autism and other developmental disabilities, and using family and friends to mitigate the risk of domestic violence are featured.

I wish you success with your efforts navigating these times.

Take care,

Randy W. Kamphaus
Dean of the College of Education

Education technology is playing a central role in supporting teaching and learning during these uncertain times. The US Department of Education recently hosted a webinar on October 28th for special education practitioners, administrators, parents, and stakeholders to discuss resources for students with or at risk for disabilities during COVID-19.

The webinar highlighted The College of Education's Center on Teaching and Learning<https://ctl.uoregon.edu/> (CTL) resource Numbershire.<https://dibels.uoregon.edu/market/numbershire> Developed by Hank Fien<https://education.uoregon.edu/people/faculty/ffien>, Ben Clarke<https://education.uoregon.edu/people/faculty/clarkeb>, Nancy Nelson<https://education.uoregon.edu/people/faculty/nnelson3>, and Lina Shanley,<https://education.uoregon.edu/people/faculty/shanley2> Numbershire is an internet-based, educational game with an intensive focus on critical whole number concepts and skills for students in kindergarten through second grade.

The Special Education Innovation Network also released a guide<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.educationmodified.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ReadyNow.SpecialEducation.9.1.20.pdf?utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=&fbclid=IwAR0BW2fS51onXmIsphGRvfg3wPuCYaP8WRTej0R1wsF3ecWbeiduaTa23dg__;!!C5qS4YX3!WbCfSO8gb4sF5Ht2D8M1LEsYzGUYFPpT2Vw3wo1z4U_KZF_G4O3W_tnWbqLDK3s0Fg$> to "ready now" special education resources during COVID-19. The CTL's KinderTEK<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/kindertek.com/__;!!C5qS4YX3!WbCfSO8gb4sF5Ht2D8M1LEsYzGUYFPpT2Vw3wo1z4U_KZF_G4O3W_tnWbqJlBnuCjQ$> app is among the resources featured. KinderTEK was developed by researchers Mari Strand Cary<https://education.uoregon.edu/people/faculty/mscary>, Ben Clarke, and Lina Shanley and helps students develop, maintain, and become fluent in critical early math skills within a fun, engaging environment.
