Please see the appended message from the Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness (SREE). There are two entries of note. First, see the reference to our own David Liebowitz and former colleague, Lauren Lindstrom. They are among the first principal investigators to enter their studies in the Registry of Efficacy and Effectiveness.

Also, the Opportunities for Women in Quantitative Methods initiative may be of interest to some of you, or your doctoral students.

SREE Launches Pilot SREE Summer Fellows Program

SREE, in collaboration with the Grantmakers for Education's Data Impact Group, is pleased to be offering an exciting new program --the SREE Summer Fellows Program. Two SREE student members will have the opportunity to spend the summer working on a 'real world' research project - answering a question that the philanthropic community is asking to help inform their work.

The application window for the initial fellow has closed, but a second application round will launch the first week of May.  Information will be sent about the opportunity via email to the SREE community and posted on the SREE website<https://www.sree.org/pages/professional/summerfellows.php>.

"Doctoral students in education seek to invest their time and energy into research topics with real-world relevance," notes Lindsay Page, associate professor of research methodology at the University of Pittsburgh and SREE Board member. "This program provides an opportunity to connect students to the community of foundations supporting work in education and the topics with which they are currently grappling. Students will have the opportunity to work with a foundation partner in defining and tackling a question of interest and generating products and insights for both the research and foundation communities."

"Too often, education funders don't have the time or expertise to synthesize the literature on an education topic relevant to their funding priorities. This pilot aims to address that shortcoming by bridging the emerging producers of knowledge and philanthropic users of research. It should be a powerful learning experience for both the grantmakers and the fellows," says Bethany Miller, Program Officer on The Kresge Foundation's Education Program and GFE Data Impact Group member.

2019 SREE Spring Conference Recap

Thank you to everyone who attended the March SREE Meeting. There were abundant opportunities to learn about the latest research findings through the 72 sessions, x posters, and 4 workshops offered at the meeting. We appreciate everyone who provided feedback by filling out the evaluation. SREE will be using the information to make improvements to future SREE conferences.

SREE would also like to congratulate Thomas Kelley-Kemple, graduate student at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Kelley-Kemple’s name was drawn at random from those who completed the conference survey to win free registration to the 2020 meeting.

Registry of Efficacy and Effectiveness

SREE’s Registry of Efficacy and Effectiveness launched almost six months ago, and SREE representatives have been actively promoting registration. These activities include exhibiting at the SREE Spring Conference and promoting the registry at the AERA meeting in both the exhibit hall at the ICPSR booth and a session featuring SREE Past-President Rebecca Maynard.

To promote study registration, SREE ran a promotion to coincide with the SREE conference—individuals entering studies March 6-14, 2019 were entered into a drawing for a free registration for SREE 2020 Spring Conference. Congratulations to Lily Hall Fesler, graduate student at Stanford University, for winning the raffle, and for contributing to transparency and replicability in education research!

SREE also thanks the following principal investigators who have all had studies registered since March 1, 2019:  Rekha Balu, Dan Cullinan, Thomas Dee, David Entwistle, Taylyn Hulse, David Liebowitz, Lauren Lindstrom,  Shelley Pasnik, William Penuel, Barbara Schneider, Susan Sheridan, Carl Sumi, Mary Wagner, and Cheri Vogel.

Update the Women in Quantitative Methods Membership Directory

We are redesigning the website and membership directory so that these resources can be more usable for our members. If you could take a moment to fill out a short survey, we will use it to update our membership lists. The directory will provide a valuable resource for our members to network, connect, and refer other talented Women in Quantitative Methods. The Women in Quantitative Methods group is forming local meetup groups in many cities and states across the country. The vision for these local groups is to create a space for women interested in quantitative methods in education research to:

  *   Partner on work or advocacy as it makes sense
The local meet-ups are intended to be fun and informal.  Members might get together for happy hour, brunch, or dinner.
