Hello,
Our staff appreciation event will be held today, Thursday, April 20, starting at 4:30 pm in HEDCO 230T. Light refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited! Please join us in celebrating the efforts of: Benedict McWhirter, stepping down as CPHS Department Head; Charles Martinez, stepping down as EMPL Department Head; Brigid Flannery, stepping down as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; and Lauren Lindstrom, moving on to become Dean of the School of Education at UC Davis.
Here is a calendar update for the remainder of the academic year. If there are events you would like to add to the calendar, all you need to do is set up the event as a meeting on your own outlook calendar and invite coeevents at uoregon.edu<mailto:coeevents at uoregon.edu> to the event.
Please use the Religious Observances Calendar provided by the Office of the Registrar to identify events, classes, exams or UO activities which may intersect with religious observances: https://registrar.uoregon.edu/calendars/religious-observances
Let me know if you have any questions.

Author Matt de la Peña Visits Campus

Location

Various Locations

The Department of Education Studies will welcome New York Times bestselling author Matt de la Peña on May 4, 2017 for three on-campus presentations. De la Peña is an award winning author of young adult literature and one of the most recognized figures in multicultural children's literature. He is the author of six critically-acclaimed novels, including Mexcian Whiteboy, The Living, and The Hunted. He is the recipient of the 2016 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Intellectual Freedom Award. That same year he also won the prestigious Newbery Medal for this picture book Last Stop on Market Street. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Illustrated by Christian Robinson, Last Stop on Market Street was also named a Randolph Caldecott Medal and Coretta Scott King Book Award honoree.

At 10am, de la Peña will be speaking to students in EDST 464 (Multicultural Literacies) in 229 McKenzie on current trends in children's literature.

At 1:30pm he will be leading a creative writing lecture/workshop in the Knight Library Browsing Room. De la Peña has taught creative writing at New York University, Vermont College, and Hamline University.

He will conclude his visit to the UO at 5:30pm at 156 Straub Hall speaking about his personal trajectory from growing up in the working-class San Diego County city of National City (CA) to becoming a best-selling, critically acclaimed author. All three presentations are free and open to the public. De la Peña's books will be on sale at all three events.

Grad Forum

Location

EMU

The 2017 Grad Forum will take place on Friday, May 12, from 9:30 to 4:00 in the new EMU. Graduate students are encouraged to submit their work to be presented in one of three formats: Poster, Three-Minute Thesis, or Symposium (format details below). The submission deadline is Wednesday, March 15, 2017.

The Grad Forum provides an excellent professional development experience for graduate students to share their work with a broad audience of faculty, other graduate students, undergraduates, and members of the larger community. The event is an opportunity to make interdisciplinary connections and compete to win up to $250 for the best presentations within a category!

Students can participate in one of three ways:
1. Poster Submissions: Submit a title; a 150 word abstract describing your research; and a 140 character thumbnail summary to be used for the promotional materials (about 25-28 words). Details about poster size will be available soon. Posters previously developed or to be developed in the future for presentation at other conferences are welcome.
2. Three Minute Thesis Submissions: Submit a title; a 150 word abstract describing your research; and a 140 character thumbnail summary to be used for the promotional materials (about 25-28 words). Presenters will have 3 minutes (no more!) to present their research at the forum and they can use one static slide. Winners have the opportunity to compete in the state finals for Three Minute Thesis, held here in Eugene on Saturday May 20, 2017.
3. Symposia Submissions: Symposia are comprised of talks by three to five graduate students (total presentation time is 1 hour). At least two different fields must be represented, and the talks should share a theme or topic. Submit a symposium title and a 300-word abstract describing the symposium theme and how each of the talks relates to it. In addition, for each individual presentation, submit a title and a 140 character thumbnail summary. Please designate one symposium participant as a contact person, who will also serve as the panel's moderator.

New this year!
* To continue the excitement of last year's popular "blitz" talks, we are holding the UO's Three Minute Thesis competition in conjunction with Grad Forum. Three Minute Thesis presentations will be one of the presentation formats.
* Symposia need to include only TWO different departments this year (although we encourage you to indulge your interdisciplinary desires to the maximum extent!). If you have an idea about a symposium and need help fleshing it out or finding other participants to complete your symposium, please contact Sara Hodges at sdhodges at uoregon.edu.
Grad Forum is open to new presenters whose research is ready to go public. We also encourage more seasoned participants to take advantage of this lively exchange of ideas. Please consider applying!

Deadline for poster, blitz presentation, and individual submissions: Wednesday, March 15, 2017.

Seminar: Writing Winning Grant Proposals

Save the date: Grant Writer's Seminars and Workshops
Writing Winning Grant Proposals
RESCHEDULED: June 15, 2017; 8 AM - 5 PM
RSVP is required to attend. Email rds at uoregon.edu <mailto:rds at uoregon.edu> to RSVP.

http://www.grantcentral.com/seminars/write-winning-grant-proposals/

This all-day presentation is the cornerstone of GWSW's seminar programs. It comprehensively addresses both practical and conceptual aspects that are important to writing competitive grant proposals. It is appropriate for faculty members, postdoctoral researchers and administrative staff who have had some exposure to writing grant applications, either through training / mentoring or personal experience. Each presentation is tailored to meet the needs of the audience, e.g., to focus on the funding agency or agencies (federal, private, and/or industry) that is / are of greatest interest to the attendees. Emphasis is given to doing the "extra" things that can make the difference between success and failure.

Regardless of the agency, participants are taught to write with a linear progression of logic, which leads reviewers through an application without them knowing that they are being led. Coping strategies to overcome the fact that applicants are writing for two different audiences - the assigned reviewers, who read the application in its entirety, and non-assigned reviewers who may have read little, or nothing, of the proposal before the meeting of the review panel - are emphasized.

Versions of this seminar include ones that are specific for NIH, NSF, USDA-NIFA, and the humanities, as well as ones that consist of any combination of those entities. Versions that include several or more agencies are, by necessity, more general than those that focus on a specific agency.

All participants receive an extensive handout, as well as a field-relevant copy of The Grant Application Writer's Workbook.
