The following message is forwarded on behalf of Senior Vice President and Provost Jim Bean -

Colleagues:

I am writing to present the process for finding the next Dean of the College of Education. This is an extremely important moment for both the College and the University. The College has been exceptionally successful, due in part to strong leadership by Dean Bullis. We owe him a great deal of gratitude.

Below I outline the process for the permanent hire, and then the interim appointment. These procedures are fairly standard, though often customized for each search based on the culture of the unit. I have met with the Executive Committee of the College in preparing these processes, but more editions are possible as we get a wider set of input.

Permanent Dean

Goal: To put in place a new leader that will continue and expand the world-class performance and reputation of the College of Education.

April, 2013

  1. Send out RFP for proposals from search firms to guide the search
  2. Establish the Search Committee. This will be done with input from the COE community, UO Senate and Faculty Advisory Council.
  3. Due to the transition in my office, the search committee will report to the President of the University.

May, 2013

  1. Prepare advertisements and position description by the Search Committee and search firm, with input from the broader community.

Summer, 2013

  1. Search firm begins collecting possible candidate names and vetting suggestions from the COE community. Both internal and external nominations are encouraged and are treated as the same throughout the process.

October, 2013

  1. Search Committee will begin meeting with the search firm to narrow down potential candidates to a semi-finalist list.

November, 2013

  1. Search Committee interviews semi-finalists and narrows to approximately three finalists. The search is kept confidential to this point to ensure a broad pool of applicants. Once finalists are chosen and invited to campus, the process becomes public.

January/February, 2014

  1. Finalists interview on campus
  2. Comments of the entire community are solicited both online and in person.
  3. President Gottfredson selects the next dean and negotiates to sign them.

July 1, 2014 - target date for new Dean in place.

Interim Dean

Goal: To have in place for the interim period a leader who can maintain momentum of the COE while continuing a focus on the future of the college.

  1. Starting immediately, I solicit input and suggestions from the broader COE community on selection of the interim.
  2. Approximately May 1, I will select a small number of candidates and meet with them privately to ascertain interest/willingness to serve, and ideas for moving the COE forward during the interim period. It is generally presumed that the interim dean will not be a candidate for the permanent position.
  3. Approximately June 1, I will announce the interim dean. In this way, they can overlap with Dean Bullis for a substantial period to enable a smooth transition.
  4. September 1, 2013, Dean Mike Bullis steps down and the Interim Dean begins their term.
  5. The term ends on the start date of the permanent dean.

I look forward to your comments at provost at uoregon.edu<mailto:provost at uoregon.edu>.

Regards, Jim
