The following message is shared on behalf of Joanna Goode, PhD in her role as chair of the Professional Responsibilities Policy Committee:
Dear COE Faculty,
With gratitude to those who submitted comments and feedback on the first draft of the Professional Responsibilities Policy in January.
The attached policy now incorporates the faculty feedback and suggestions that were submitted during the comment period. The committee was grateful for the numerous strong suggestions and questions submitted that allowed us to build additional clarity into the policy. Thank you for your careful review. As noted previously, there are no significant changes to the policy or expectations associated with workload, however, several areas now provide more clarity. In addition to the policy attached for vote, your comments and feedback also were critical in the development of both the Implementation Guidance and an FAQ document that answers questions and goes into deeper explanation of some of the items that came up but that don’t easily lend themselves to being part of the policy. The Implementation Guidance and FAQs<https://uoregon.sharepoint.com/sites/CollegeofEducationPolicyMaterialSharepoint/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx> are posted here temporarily until the policy is finalized and may assist your final review of the policy and your vote.
Questions and comments were comprehensive. We hope the edits to policy, implementation guidance, and the development of the FAQ document capture multiple recurring issues that were raised including:
* Workload decision-making transparency: Decisions around recurring and unique aspects of workload in the COE (e.g., credentialing)
* Mentorship: Where it fits and how it is counted
* Supervision: Acknowledgement of its unique and varied roles in the COE
* Scholarship: Where it fits and how it is counted, particularly for instructional faculty
* Professional development: Where it fits and how it is counted
* Service: How it is conceptualized as part of workload in the COE
The Professional Responsibilities Policy - Vote 2024<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1TjOb0haOLvJMuW> due May 17th also includes a question to assist the committee in determining the best way to provide additional implementation support around the policy.
With gratitude to the faculty for your careful review, to the members of committee for their ongoing diligence in considering this feedback:
* Elisa Jamgochian (SPECS)
* Karrie Walters (CPHS)
* Lisa Mazzei (EDST)
* Angie Whalen (SPECS)
* Ben Clarke (SPECS)
* Leslie Leve (CPHS)
* Sylvia Thompson (SPECS
* Myself, Joanna Goode (chair)
And to Dianna Carrizales-Engelmann for her support of the committee in finalizing this document for vote with me.
Summary:
The updated Professional Responsibilities policy does not change the COE workload expectations for any faculty groups. The expectation of 40% research, 40% instruction, and 20% service (with a 5- to 4-course standard course load) remains in place for tenure track faculty. The expectation of 80% instruction, 20% service (with an 8-course standard course load), remains in place for Career Instructional Faculty (CIF).
Summary of changes:
* Both Tenure Track faculty (TTF) and Career Faculty workload expectations are now combined into one policy.
* Language is streamlined via university template to align with language used in other campus units.
* Supervision is emphasized as a unique element of COE instructional activities.
* Plain language definitions of common terms have been included.
* Course releases (i.e., releases from instructional responsibilities) have been explained in greater detail with COE examples.
* A faculty member’s service expectations continue to be primarily unassigned by COE, however the COE and University expectations associated with service are provided in greater detail.
* Career Instructional Faculty (CIF) and Career Research Faculty (CRF) are introduced as internal COE-specific acronyms.
* A brief summary of the professional responsibilities implications for CRF are included.
Again, voting eligible faculty are asked to please use the Professional Responsibilities Policy Vote 2024<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1TjOb0haOLvJMuW> by Friday May 17th survey to review and submit any comments related to the updated policy (attached).
Best,
Joanna
