Dear COE Faculty,

Best wishes for the Winter quarter.

The comment period for the COE Professional Responsibilities policy is now open. The comment period will remain open through January 24th. Following the comment period any relevant changes resulting from this faculty review will be made and summarized prior to dean review and faculty vote.

With gratitude to the committee for their dedicated review and discussion in the development of this policy draft:

Summary:
The updated Professional Responsibilities policy does not change the COE workload expectations for any faculty groups. The expectation of 40% research, 40% instruction, and 20% service (with a 5- to 4-course standard course load) remains in place for tenure track faculty. The expectation of 80% instruction, 20% service (with an 8-course standard course load), remains in place for Career Instructional Faculty (CIF).

Summary of changes:

  *   Both Tenure Track faculty (TTF) and Career Faculty workload expectations are now combined into one policy.
  *   Language is streamlined via university template to align with language used in other campus units.
  *   Supervision is emphasized as a unique element of COE instructional activities.
  *   Plain language definitions of common terms have been included.
  *   Course releases (i.e., releases from instructional responsibilities) have been explained in greater detail with COE examples.
  *   A faculty member's service expectations continue to be primarily unassigned by COE, however the COE and University expectations associated with service are provided in greater detail.
  *   Career Instructional Faculty (CIF) and Career Research Faculty (CRF) are introduced as internal COE-specific acronyms.
  *   A brief summary of the professional responsibilities implications for CRF are included.



Please use the Professional Responsibilities updates 2023 - 2024<https://oregon.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1Y177BKrEiuFmxE> survey to review and submit any comments related to the updated policy (attached). As indicated above, notes submitted via this survey will be compiled and reviewed by the committee and adjustments made (as appropriate) to the policy prior to submitting it for faculty vote. Any adjustments made to the policy as a result of the comment period will be summarized prior to the vote.

The dean's office has had and will continue to have iterative opportunities to review the draft and will be offered a full review opportunity after the comments have been incorporated. Any changes made based on dean's office review and OtP review will be summarized prior to faculty vote.
