Hello All—just wanted to give a brief update on some things happening in the Senate.
First, attached is the UO’s HECC evaluation (see Senate President’s comments below). Some very interesting data contained within, good news we have over 20% of students from non-white backgrounds, this is a significant improvement (but still pretty low. Bad news, resident undergraduate tuition and fees at the University of Oregon increased 60.2% (based on the continuing student rate) in the last 10 years. Clearly there is much more in the report.
Second, it was announced at the last senate meeting that students in our licensure programs are eligible to get the vaccine along with other Oregon teachers.
Third, there are been a lot of work on the Teaching Evaluation Framework which was rolled out last year. There are been efforts to use a common framework across campus that includes your instructor reflections, student enagment information, as well as recommended changes to the peer evaluation approach to make it more comprehensive then in years past. The proposal to institute these procedures were highly debated and resulted in the proposal to be tabled and re-addressed in a future meeting. For more information on the proposal as well as accompanying documents follow this link: https://senate.uoregon.edu/senate-motions/us2021-04-affirming-multi-source-criteria-based-teaching-evaluation-framework
Fourth, the ASUO (student senators) are very concerned about the mental health of their colleagues and encourage us faculty to reach out to students and ensure they have necessary mental health supports through the counseling center https://counseling.uoregon.edu/ and the health center https://health.uoregon.edu/ , many of these services are available remotely as well as asynchronously. Also that are working on ideas/ways to increase student participation in completing the Student Experience Surveys—the biggest recommendation is to provide time in class to do it.
Fifth, it is pretty clear that the Graduate School is going to be moved to the Provost’s Office overseen by Janet Woodruff, thereby eliminating another Dean position (i.e., Dean of Library is now a vice provost). They anticipate hiring another Vice Provost to direct it. Woodruff anticipates this will have minimal changes to graduate school policy/procedures (the Graduate Council will continue in its current form) and may have added benefits of more attention/money to graduate training from the recruitment, advising, and advertising departments.
The Division of Equity and Inclusion has a number of great presenters for Black History Month https://inclusion.uoregon.edu/bhm

Feel free to contact me with any questions/concerns that the Senate could address.
Other COE Senators include Jessica Cronce and Gina Biancarosa.
Have a great week colleagues our students appreciate your efforts.
Beth
