The Educational Methodology, Policy and Leadership (EMPL) department is pleased to offer the following Fall courses for your consideration. Please forward to prospective students you think will benefit from these classes.
EDLD 610 Intro Mixture Models - Mondays, 9:00am-12:50pm, 4 credits taught by Mark Van Ryzin
This course will review Mixture Models, a group of techniques that evaluate the potential for distinct sub-groups or classes within a sample. The course will use Mplus for Latent Class Analysis, CACE modeling, and Growth Mixture Modeling, and will use SAS for Latent Class Trajectory Analysis (i.e., Proc Traj)
Prerequisite: Students in the class will be expected to have a working knowledge of regression and to understand the basics of growth models, but will not be expected to know the specifics of Mplus or SAS.
EDLD 625 Survey and Questionnaire Design- Wednesdays, 4:00pm-7:50pm, 4 credits taught by Mike Bullis
The course is designed for graduate students who have completed an introductory research design course and a statistics course. The course will offer an overview of the core aspects of the survey process. At various points in the course, faculty will be invited to discuss surveys they have, or are, conducting.
The primary product of the course is a proposal describing a survey project that will, or could be, conducted. Accordingly, it is essential for the student to have a solid idea for such a project before the course begins.
EDLD 659 Scholarly Writing - Tuesdays, 1:00pm-3:50pm, 4 credits taught by Mike Bullis
The course is designed for advanced doctoral students who are at the point of preparing, or starting to prepare, a manuscript for professional publication. The primary product of the course will be a manuscript that will be submitted for publication. Before starting the course, prospective students must have a clear idea for a publication. In most cases students should have a dataset they have analyzed, or will analyze, for the manuscript.
Throughout the course senior faculty have been invited to discuss their respective careers, achievements and challenges, recommendations for career success, writing style, and publication strategies.
Please contact the instructors with any questions and have a great end of the summer.
