Dear Faculty,

We had a wonderful meeting Wednesday where we discussed the results of the faculty work on these policies. I appreciate the work of Lisa Fortin who provided us with a tasty lunch in a relaxed venue - Gerlinger Alumni Lounge. I also appreciated the opportunity to thank the committee members personally for their many hours of work. As a reminder, the combined list of members for these two groups is:

Susan Boettcher
Tiffany Brown
Erin Chaparro
Rob Horner
Mark Horney
Shoshana Kerewsky
Johanna Larson
Seth May
Heather Moore
Chris Murray
Deborah Olson
Alison Schmitke
Jo Smith
McKay Sohlberg
Mark Van Ryzin

In addition, Brigid Flannery devoted innumerable hours to this effort with the support of Shaun Haskins. Nice work, all.

As promised, I am providing copies of the policies as I will submit them to Academic Affairs. My changes and revisions are provided as are my rationales. Please see the 'comments' boxes included. I did share this same feedback with the faculty in attendance at lunch, and received their questions and concerns. Chief among these was the role of the FTE calculation spreadsheet that accompanied the policy document in making FTE decisions.

As follow up, I have an idea for expediting our work on the load "calculators" addressed in this draft. I propose asking Department and Research Unit Heads to use the calculators on a trial basis this year, and submit the results for analysis by NTTF faculty/committee, Brigid, and myself. This process would give us data from a real world trial that could inform any future consideration of the method, and provide information on the philosophical and practical implications of the use of this tool for our college. With this information COE would be better prepared to consider any necessary revisions of the calculator, or to consider alternative approaches. Of course, we would have to be careful to analyze only group data so that we do not violate the personnel confidentiality of individual NTTF faculty.

For now, we turn our attention to the TTF policies. I thank you for your effort and collaboration in this important governance work.

Regards,

Randy
