Dear CAS Colleagues,

Many of you are in the process of developing tenure-track proposals for next year, in line with the Institutional Hiring Plan, and I want to give you further context that might help you shape those proposals for the coming year and beyond: the CAS vision statement.

Last summer, our new Provost, Jayanth Banavar, asked all of the academic deans to produce vision statements for each of their units. This has been an energizing and thought-provoking opportunity for the CAS deans, as we worked together to craft a meaningful statement for the entire college that articulates our strengths and our potential for capitalizing on those strengths. In this process, it has become increasingly clear to me that we are at a pivotal moment in our history. I believe we have an excellent opportunity to set a trajectory that will transform our curriculum and research profile in imaginative new ways, for decades to come. And I will look to all of you to bring forward your best ideas to accomplish this. In addition to innovation funds I already have dedicated for these purposes, I am seeking additional donor support to build these resources-and pass them on to you.

For further background about the vision statement, and download the statement itself, please read the latest installment of the Thinking About CAS blog<https://cas.uoregon.edu/2018/01/a-once-in-a-generation-opportunity/>. I invite all CAS faculty and staff to respond to me and/or the divisional deans with your thoughts and will plan to hold public conversations to get further feedback on the vision and explore how the entire CAS community can be part of it.

Warm regards,

Andrew
