Cinema Pacific Film Festival announces 2013 program
Featuring films from Mexico, Singapore, and the U.S. West Coast
Today, Cinema Pacific unveiled the wide array of films, exhibitions, parties, and performances in its fourth annual event, taking place in Eugene and Portland April 17 to 21, 2013. Full details about the programs summarized below can be found on the festival website.
Focus: Mexico featuring Guillermo Arriaga
Cinema Pacific is proud to join with the Oak Hill School and the UO Latin American Studies Program to bring the legendary screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga to Oregon. Arriaga is renowned for his nonlinear narratives that connect characters across national borders, most notably in the trilogy he wrote and Alfonso Inarritu directed: Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel.
Arriaga is returning to Oregon, where he filmed The Burning Plain in Portland and Coos Bay in 2008. The film featured Academy Award-winner Jennifer Lawrence in her first starring role, alongside Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger. At the Bijou Art Cinemas, Arriaga will screen The Burning Plain on April 18 and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada on April 17. Arriaga will also give several talks about screenwriting and the U.S.-Mexican border at the Oak Hill School and UO.
Cinema Pacific's Focus: Mexico will also highlight the exciting renaissance in contemporary Mexican documentary filmmaking, and will screen the film version of a multi-media performance focusing on border issues, Amarillo. Find out more at ourwebsite!
Focus: Singapore and more Asian cinema
Visiting Singaporean filmmakers Colin Goh and Yen Yen Wooare a husband-and-wife team with a remarkably eclectic slate of productions. They have released two feature films, includingSingapore Dreaming, praised by Variety as "a graceful satire on Western capitalism in the East." Singapore Dreaming screens at the Bijou Art Cinemas at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.
Goh and Woo are experts on the Singaporean English dialect their government is attempting to suppress, and they will deliver a lecture on the subject of "Singlish: An Authentic or Broken Voice?" on Friday, April 19. Finally, Goh and Woo will project and discuss episodes from Dim Sum Warriors, their latest project, a graphic novel that is also a Chinese-English iPad app, in the Eugene Public Library on Saturday, April 20, at 1:00 p.m.
Cinema Pacific will also feature media installations in both Eugene and Portland by Singaporean artist Ming Wong, and we will be screening an exciting new Chinese narrative feature, The Love Songs of Tiedan, introduced by 2013 Festival Fellow Berenice Reynaud. More information
Oregon on Screen
This year's festival will include a selection of the Best of the Northwest Filmmakers Festival, which will include the audience prize-winner for best feature, Buoy. Steve Doughton's film has been lauded by Todd Haynes as "exquisitely controlled and grounded in its pitch-perfect performances, writing and direction." Doughton will accompany his film in person. Also coming from Portland will be director Brian Lindstrom with Alien Boy: The Life and Death of James Chasse, the sensation of the recent Portland International Film Festival. The film delves into the tragic beating and killing of Chasse by Portland police and asks larger questions about how society treats mental illness. This screening is cosponsored by the Good Works Film Festival.
