Traditionally, Venetian trade is associated with convoys of galleys organised by the state. Nicola Carotenuto will use Venice instead as the perfect case study for the importance of insular connectivity, highlighting the relevance of local mediators, as well as the role of privately-owned cargo ships and bulky commodities, shipped on vessels owned by Venetians, foreigns, and Venetian subjects alike. Also two further elements will be underscored: the interactions between Venetians, local elites, and the vast plethora of middlemen who made trade possible abroad, and the tensions existing within Venetian trade diasporas around the Mediterranean.
