Hi Senate Exec,
Please see the message below from Dwaine Plaza, the Senate President at OSU, about their plans around and after the election. I’m curious to hear if you would be in favor of a senate- or senate exec-hosted speaker series or some other kind of campus-wide activity and, if so, what that might look like.
Also, please note that their message to faculty has not yet gone out, so please do not share it beyond this group.

We are a little further along in creating some guidelines for faculty and and having a post election series of talks by our Political Science Faculty. I have attached the letter that will be going out to our faculty in the next few days.

Maybe there are other OUS campuses also writing similar statements to their faculty/students. It always helps to start off with something to work from.

What I do see around Corvallis is a steady stream of pick up trucks flying the Trump flag and driving around the city. Likely trying to send a message about their presence.

We really want our students to know that we’re aware of how affected they are and to remind faculty to be empathic and make accommodations.

I think that is a grim possibility regardless of the outcome of the election. A large gathering of our students in protest or celebration could easily become a target for such a group. An interesting thing Schill noted is that the UO campus is technically closed to the public because of the pandemic. So, unlike previous instances where hostile and threatening groups have come to campus, we have grounds to bar them from entering or kick them out. Of course, the question of whether UOPD or Eugene PD would be prepared to do that (assuming armed groups, etc) is unclear. I think this possibility scared Mike enough that he will run through scenarios with our disaster management team.
