Dear UO Senators,

I hope to see you today in person at our Senate Orientation (3pm-5pm, Gerlinger Lounge). I’ll be speaking about our Senate leadership priorities for the year. One of our priorities is increasing UO’s participation in the Interinstitutional Faculty Senate. Last year, I attended their meetings and realized how vital the organization is to having University Senate voices heard at the State level.

>From our UO Senate By-Laws:

ARTICLE 8: INTERINSTITUTIONAL FACULTY SENATE (IFS) 8.1 Inter-institutional Faculty Senate. Created by the State Board of Higher Education in 1970, the Inter-institutional Faculty Senate (IFS) brings together faculty voices from the public universities in Oregon.

The IFS comprises all the Senates from Oregon’s public universities.

UO Senate has three voting representatives on the IFS: Senate President, Senate Vice-President, and one Senator (who serves a term of two years). We want to elect our IFS Senator representative during the first Senate meeting of the year.

The IFS meetings are in person and via Zoom. I attended the in-person meetings last year at PSU and at Southern Oregon University. I found them extremely useful in understanding some of the challenges our colleagues face throughout the state and how we could jointly advocate for significant policy changes. The meetings are one-day, on a Friday, once a term.

Content includes briefings from the host university President, Provost, HECC, legislators, and other critical stakeholders in Oregon’s higher education system.

Please let me know if you want to nominate yourself or another senator. Also, don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about the role.

Best,

Gerard
