Greetings UO Senate,
I’m writing to you as an ASUO Senator and as a fellow UO Senator. First, thank you again for your support with ASUO on the past resolution about supporting student I-fee autonomy and student tickets.
Recently, the Black Lives Matter Committee of the ASUO Senate has written two proposed resolutions. The first discussed increased programming, retention, and funding for the success of Black and Indigenous students at the UO. This second resolution discusses the relationship with the University of Oregon Police Department and the contracts with prison labor.
To make our statement as impactful as possible, we’re asking for the support of many organizations, committees, student groups, faculty and staff, and other statewide leadership. We are still in the preliminary stages of the outreach for sponsors, but we expect to receive the sponsors of our past resolution and more. I’ve attached the first resolution “ASUO Senate Resolution 006: Campus and Resource Accessibility for BIPOC Students” as a pdf here<https://uoregon-my.sharepoint.com/:b:/g/personal/senpres_uoregon_edu/ERk8AQ93RVlGmqabZhquawkBzWGIocdJoKaoEcnHvi2mcA?e=NdM2TC>, and since this second resolution, “ASUO Senate Resolution 008: Defund the University of Oregon Police Department (UOPD) and Divest from Prison Labor” is a draft, it is available as a google document here<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-ETQplM4mf5tiG9T4G1WwSQEBcN2iX1xZuP5JME11Xc/edit?usp=sharing>.
If you would be interested in sponsoring this resolution (which means name/title on the sponsor line), please let me know by this Sunday, the 7th at noon. You may sponsor it with your position as a UO Senator, department/program title, or even with a community group affiliation.
If you have any thoughts, questions or concerns that you want shared with the committee writing this bill, please let me know by Friday the 6th at 4pm before our next meeting. The other senators, Annika Mayne and Jenna Travers are also a part of the UO Senate and this committee at ASUO and will also take concerns, questions, or comments about this resolution as well. You can reach Annika at asuosenate07 at uoregon.edu<mailto:asuosenate07 at uoregon.edu>, and Jenna at asuosenate08 at uoregon.edu<mailto:asuosenate08 at uoregon.edu>. Lastly, I've also CC'd the ASUO Senate President and Chair of the Senate Black Lives Matter Committee.
Thank you for your support,
Ella Meloy, she/her/hers
